1975 Evinrude 85

Ok, just bought this attached to a 1975 V-Mate 1. I bought a new battery, pulled the spark plugs, spun it over by hand a few times, put the plugs back it, sprayed a little 50:1 fuel in the carbs, hit the key, and she fired up! I shut it off after a few seconds, hooked up the waterhose to the ears, and restarted her, letting it run for about 1 min. My question is this, I am mechanically inclined, but this is my first boat. What types of things should I do before I actually go out and run this thing?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Welcome. You need to be sure you have a good water pump.Cooling that motor is probably the most important thing, besides lubrication.Make sure you have water coming out p-hole and backside below cover. If you know a little you should be sure you have good compression on all cylinders. You should also be sure you check gear oil!If it's milky, bad. If just dirty,go easy till you change it.(soon)You might charge the batterie, and maybe a second, untill you know how it's going to start and run.Put a fresh tank of gas and good 2stroke oil.50 to 1 mix.Oil whatever cables, etc.and you should be ready for a Meiden-Voyage...Good Luck:banana: Don't run that to hard with just the hose!Get that in some water before you bring the RPM's up over1500.

Thanks for the suggestions! Anyplace in particular to get a water-pump? I'm in Va, but don't mind ordering parts from people who understand what customer service is. BTW, what is "good" oil in your opinion?

ABSOLUTELY AGREE ON THE WATER PUMP! You can assume it's shot since you started it for a minute without water- AND it's been sitting a while. Cheap insurance. How did the plugs look when you pulled them ( pretty carbon/ black - rich- or clean as brand new - could mean water got to them) Check comp for sure- oil is a preference decision- alot of guys like the Merc oil, I use penziol synthetic and mix at 40-45:1 just to make sure I'm getting enough lubrication. plugs are cheaper then pistons! It will smoke a bit more but you KNOW it's getting oil inside. The first reply you got was dead on! Follow his advice!

I had a 73 johnson 85hp motor on the back of another boat. Hard to start after it sat for a couple days but it was an amazing motor. Once warmed up, it screamed!!! Good luck with it, I can't tell you anything more than what was already said!!!

new to you motor

I would replace the whole water pump, not just the impeller, it's only about $20 more for the whole thing and then you will have peace of mind. You don't know when the last owner replaced it before, most wait until there is no water coming out the pisser, witch is too late.I would also change the lower unit oil and inspect the old oil for signs of water(milky look) and metal shavings. Also change, or clean the fuel filter, depending on witch type it is. Those motors usually run forever with a little regular maintenance.Google brp parts and you will find the site to look up you're parts.
