1977 Convincer Starter

Chadder

New member
Need some help with my 77. It is the I/O and I believe it is a 305. At times, when you turn the key, it will only click once and then dead. If I try 2 or 3 times it will eventually turn over and start. Is this the starter? Also, if it is, where can I find a replacement for this age of boat. Also, it looks like the cylinoid is separate from the starter in the back left corner of the engine. Is this correct?

Thanks

i would check your battery terminals to see if theyre corroded and also tight if they are the top post clamp on style make sure you cant spin them around with your hands once theyre bolted tight then check the leads on your selonoid to make sure theyre tight same process see if you can turn them with your hands when theyre bolted on the studs if all that is good then you could have a bad starter but good news the starter for your motor fits a lot of other motors i think there is only a few different styles for all of the chevy motors right on up to the new generation motors just make sure to get a marine starter

i missed the selonoid question that may be a slave selonoid i think the older ones used those hopefully somebody else will chime in on that

Merc uses a slave solenoid as well as the one mounted to the starter.

The starter is the same for 4.3, 305, and 350's. I bought a alt from them and the price was great. It worked great till I broke the terminal off while doing this last motor swap. I shall see how their "hassle free 1 year NO HASSLE WARRANTY" works out:thumb: Their shipping is fast as well and they stock tons of parts.

Take it to a good rebuild shop.

If you can take the starter off and take it to a auto electric shop they can test it and rebuild it if it needs rebuilding. It will cost half as much as brand new and work like new. Also most rebuild shops give a pretty good warranty. :thumb:
