1977 Inmate

Speedboatr

New member

Testing the waters with my 1977 Inmate, This is a great little boat and don’t want to give it away, however I don’t have the time to finish it. It started a few years ago when I purchased the hull (from a board member here) as a home for a 4.3 merc. & alpha drive that was taking up room in my garage. Once the motor was installed I wanted to replace the carpet and change the engine hatch and rear seat. I never made it past installing the motor and drive. I have used the boat a few times over the past two years but just don’t have time to finish it the way I wanted to. The boat can definitely be used as is and the hull is solid. I replace the bellows, shift cable, transom bearing and U-joints in the drive when installed the motor. Don’t want to give it away but don’t want to store it again this winter.
Asking $ 3,900.00

What motor was originally in it? Got any pics of engine? Need to give more info if you want to peak some interest. ie. How fast, length, year and lots of pics. Looks like an interesting little boat from what I see so far! Good luck on sale.

The 4.3 MerCuiser and alpha one drive are a 1987 model. As far as top speed, sad to say I don’t know. The speedometer is not working and I have only had the boat out a few times over the past two seasons and usually with family and friends to tube, ski, ect. To guess I would say around 50 mph but that would be a guess. I put a new 21 pitch prop on it when I installed the motor (was a guess on the pitch) and seems to come out of the hole great, maybe a little two quick. Just a few weeks ago I had my daughter and two of her friends on a tube with 4 more adults in the boat and it pulled the tube like nothing was behind the boat. Coming on plane is next to nothing the boat just jumps on plane with no real effort.
Not sure of the original motor, when I purchased the boat there was no motor or dive on it. my guess is a 4 cylinder, and I believe that is why the tachometer is not working correctly.
The boat is 17 ½ ‘ long. It is titled as a 19’ boat, guess they included the swim platform that is the only way you can get close to 19’.
The boat needs someone to dial it in (get the correct pitch prop for how you would use the boat, fix speedometer, tachometer, stereo, ect.) all are little things but I just don’t have time to finish it.

Did the boat have doubler stringers or one single stringer down the middle. I think the 4 cylinder engine had a single stringer. Some of the other guys on here may know. Or did you have to change stringers and mounts for the 4.3. That little boat set up right should do 60 easy, I would say. What do the rest of you guys think?

Boat has double stringers, and looking at it don’t believe anyone has changed or modified it since it left Checkmate in 77. It could have had a different motor, really have no idea what motor it had originally.
