1979 Checkmate Predictor

I have a 79 Checkmate Predictor no power.....yet! I am looking at a early 90's Evinrude 140 looper. I am set up with a 6" bobs jackplate dual cable steering. What speed do you think I can expect on this boat. Boat has two bucket seats and carpet that's pretty much it. Fairly light with no back seat ect. Thank you for some input. Should I just go V6 150? I'd like to see 65 mph but like always $ doesnt grow on trees for me either. The 140 will get me boating thats how i am looking at it right now.

I have a 78 predictor with a Johnson 140 v4, so far it runs 55mph with with 2 people and full fuel, turning a 20 pitch raker. I do have the backseat (or most of it) in mine, and it did not run much different with just me in the boat. Turning 5400-5500 rpm. I am fairly certain I have more on the setup to correct and try, but here is where I am currently. Also have a cmc tilt\trim plate as the trim pump was not working when I got the boat\motor combo. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping for more in the 60+ range....hopfully I can get her setup to run close to that. Im not in a position to buy a 150 and dont seem to be able to find one reasonably priced here in South Florida. Where you guys located? I am looking to run the Scream and Fly Toys for Tots poker run in November on the St Johns River in North Florida.

I am located on the southeast side of columbis, sc. I am going to spend some more time moving the motor around to see if I can get a little better performance out of it.

DS280 has a predictor with a V4-140 and is running in the mid 60s, maybe a little faster, but it is a very nice setup for perfomance and handling.

I felt like there was more left in the setup. I think I definately need more prop as I am hitting the 5500 rpm fairly quickly. By the prop calculators a 24 pitch would put me at about 65mph. Is a Raker the best prop for this boat? I have been reading on the site and that is what seems to be chosen the most.

Got the motor! 140 looper 1989

Well I got 1989 140 looper. Apparently I ve got a bad gear case. Bangs while running. Adjusted linkage still not fixed. Either way did 54mph with me 190lbs and 2 others about 130 each. Ran good other then the gear case issue. I think the clutch dogs bad/messed up. In need of new lower for 89 140 looper. anyone? Ran 13 x 19 prop.
