1983 Checkmate

5k, wow good deal, amazign looken boat. Make sure to keep that trailer well cared for goen in and out of salt water. That boat looks like a museum piece, if you dusted off the motor and shined it up you wouldnt be able to tell its ever been driven

brown with flake i cant disagree looks like my boats older sibling

Look under I-Boats for a lot of information on this engine, this is the mercruiser aluminum engine block using the 460 ford cast iron head. I looked at a boat with an engine like this, but it was in rough shape. From what I read, you best keep the water pump in the outdrive changed about every year to keep the engine from ever running hot. Keep the engine from running hot or it will blow the head gasket. The engine has a front alternator incorporated into the engine waterpump, very expensive to replace. They have an aftermarket alternator kit you can install if the original ever goes bad. Yours is a 2bbl design, the 4 bbl was about 170 hp. Motor does not like high RPMs so dont under-prop the motor. There is a checkmate now on ebay now like this for sale with a bad cam, a common problem due to the water pump starting to leak and messing up the cam. If nothing breaks, it is a good HP inboard motor for the size, as compared to the old "Chevy II" 4 cylinders which put out 120 to 140 hp.

Thanks Southernboy....good info. I just picked up a Clymer Manual for it and have been browsing through it.
Since I have had it sitting here at the house I have noticed quite a bit of oily type substance leaking onto the driveway. seems to be coming from the hole I also found in the bellows...any ideas? I think I will tkae it to the local Boat shop as I have no experinece with this engine or boat. It sat in a garage for at least a year and a half before I got it. It did run and sound great when I had it in the water a few weeks ago.
