1984 Exciter prop

1984 Exciter I/O 350, 65 mph on the gauge at 4200 rpm with a 23 pitch cleaver. Is there any room for any more performance or should I leave it alone? The engine is all stock. Thanks

I also have a 84 exciter with the 350 I/0. I have run a few props on mine and here is what I have found.

21p cleaver ran 63 mph gps at 5400 rpms.
21p high five ran 60 mph at 5600 rpm

currently have a 23p laser 2 running 67 mph at 4900 rpm.

I think you need to get a gps reading on your speed because 65 mph at 4200 with a 23p prop does not sound right to me.

Also I noticed that the cleaver was not a good prop on these boats as it did not provide much bow lift and took much longer to get on plane than the laser 2. The high five is almost instantly on plane, it just jumps out of the water.

Lastly, I think you should try a 21p and get the rpms up a little. My motor really picks up in power above 4500 rpm

Just to add in, I put your figures into a prop slip calculator and if you were running a true 65 mph with a 23p prop and a 1.5:1 gear ratio you would be running -7% slip. So that is not possible. It says 61 mph with 0 slip, so my best guess is that you have closer to 10% slip which would put you at 55mph.

So there is room for improvement.

Option 1 = Keep your 23p cleaver and put some money into the motor and get some more hp. I have an edelbrock performer intake manifold and holly 650 carb. Those 2 mods could possibly get you up to the 4600 - 4800 rpm range with the same prop.

or try a 21p prop and see how it does.

But Im just a noob speaking from what little experience I have.

props

Thanks for your info, I will be trying some different props pretty soon and I will let you know how I make out.

stock 350?

As far as I know its all stock internals. Only thing done that I know of is a intake manifold and holly 650 carb. It was like that when I got so I don't know if anything else was done to it.

speed run

Tried another pass with this thing last weekend, All stock 1984 Exciter 350 23 pitch cleaver 2 people in the boat 63-64 on the speedo gauge at 4500 rpm. I have not checked gps yet. Is there any room for improvement?

Probably, but really you have no idea what speed you are really seeing, those pitot speedo gauges are horribly inaccurate.

GPS speed

1/8 of a tank of fuel, 620 lbs. of passengers: 61 mph at 4500 rpm. I think I could have held it a little longer and got a couple more mph but I will wait until I am by myself to get a good reading. I think if I could make it rev a little more I would see more speed. I want to get this cleaver off of it because its been banged up and shaped back up with a hammer it looks like. I keep getting told the laser 2 is the best for this boat for all around good performance. Anybody got one they want to sell? 23 pitch?
