1984 Merc overheating.

I got a ski rope wrapped around the prop, it shut off. I unwrapped the rope and now the overheat buzzer goes off. Is it likely the impeller? If not what else could it be?

Change the impeller if you havent done it in a while its probabaly due anyway, and get a water pressure guage and a temp guage if you dont have one. then make sure you dont have any blockage when you have the lower off.

Impeller

Make sure when replacing impeller, you inspect it well....if it seems brittle or has obvious cracks, that is your likely culprit. If it looks good, replace it anyway, but you now need to be on the look out as to other reasons why your engine is overheating.......dont mess with this stuff, you dont want to fry your powerhead, water press gauge is most important gauge by far!!

If its a Black Max I would also have the thermostats and popit valve replaced also. Make sure that any trash or sand that might have made it to the powerhead is cleaned out.
