1989 Convincer

New member
I recently purchased a 1989 Convincer w/ 454 for $9000 w/Trailer from a buddy. The boat is in good shape besides some minor things. I was wondering if anybody had the book value on this baby?? Also, is anybody familiar with the cabin doors on these boats? The latch seems to be a very poor design & is constantly opening. I was thinking of taking the whole door off & having a canvas cover made for the cabin entrance. Anybody have any other solutions?? OK, 1 more ?? Also thinking of putting k-planes on, hoping to make the boat more staple from side 2 side. is that the right solution, and what would be a good type???

Welcome to the board! As fare as the Chine walk, check to see how much play you have in the steering system. If you do not have hydraulic, it may be time to chance the steering cable to tighten it up for more stability. A lot cheeper than K-planes too.

ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 1 320 H.P

Value on the boat, according to the ABOS Marine dealers Electronic Blue Book is as follows, this is without the trailer.
$8,100 wholesale low
$$11,700 Wholesale High
$14,600 retail, this was ran in average condition..you can do a little give and take depending on condition.

Drez and I will talk about the door and see if we can come up with something. K-planes.. they are awesome, but they are Expensive... I don't have my book here at home, but I believe the K-planes with indicators is around the $5,000 plus mark.. they are however incredible..

Does the boat have trim tabs already? There are a few brands of them out there, Checkmate currently is using Lenco's on the new models, we have a 2000 in for warranty work and it has, I believe Load Leveler Tabs, I'll double check that in the morning. We called the company and they stood behind it, Lenco also did on Bills boat. If you have any additional questions please let myself and the rest of the crew at Checkmate-boats.com someone here has either done it, owns it, or one way or another we'll find it! Welcome to the best place on the web! Rick

Burke,
If you need to replace that steering system, I have a complete system with tilt helm from my '99 259 for sale---CHEAP---

Thanks for the quick response! The boat does have trim tabs. The steering is a good question. I will have to check that. Burke

Burke,

Hi, I am Thomas and I work for Bennett Marine in the Client Service Department.

I noticed you are looking to install K-planes on your vessel even though it already has a set. Could you explain your reasons for replacing them and what brand name are they?

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas

For anyone with an older Merc I/O that has some "play" in the steering, try this.Grab the outdrive, move it back and forth.See how much movement there is until the steering wheel moves. Two things I found were, the Clevis pin that connects the steering cable to the outdrive wears out. They're just a couple bucks and a few minutes work that will take a chunk of "play" out of the system.Another thing I found was the arm that steers/and connects to the drive becomes loose.

On alphas you have to drill large holes into the upper gimbal housing to access the nut and bolt.(Merc. sells a kit to do this)I've taken boats that were down right dangerous to drive, steer like new!

Welcome to the board Burke. Good luck with the boat. I can't help much on an I/O other than the engine part. I am an outboard guy.
