1991 'Rude XP 175

Ok, I have the opportunity to purchase a blown XP 175 for a very good price. It actually never blew, it got hot and scored 2 pistons due to a slow water pump and disconnected temp alarm. The guy intended to rebuild it so he has already bored it 0.030 over. All that I would really need would be new pistons, gaskets and to have the bearings and crank checked. Plus I think he's keeping his lower unit, another downfall.

Here's the dilema, if it were a merc I would have bought it already. The guy is asking around 400. First problem, are these good motors? This one was on a pontoon so it wasn't run hard. What kind of weight compared to say a 2.0 150 Merc or 2.4 175/200 Merc? Also, 91 was the first year for the 60 degree looper for the OMC's, but is the 91 XP still that oversized goofy looking 90 degree or does it look like the intruders? If it looked like the intruders then I wouldn't have a problem with it so much. But this is going on a Predictor and I am concerned abou the weight.

It all comes down to, is this a good enough deal to overlook the fact its not a merc? Or should I just hold out for what I really want? Anybody, please chime in here.

I once saw a Predictor at the boat ramp as I was pulling out with that same motor. I never saw him or the boat again so I don't know how it performed. But, it floated very well and it was on a 6" jackplate.

Those are ok motors, just make sure you have a big enough gas tank. But i wouldnt think twice about buying one for $400, the gearcase is worth that alone.

These were strong motors ran fairly well as far as top end, as it was said in the post above the gear case is worth that alone, I would be a little weery about the boring on these motors, but all in all they were good motors! For $400 bucks i would buy it and if you didn't want to use it sell it for $1200-1500 or so!!

I'm pretty sure that they were the 60 degree motors. I had the same motor on a 1984 Seaswirl spyder and loved it. If you buy it and it doesn't come with a lower unit I have one that should fit 1992 175 rude. I'd like somewhere around $400 OBO for the lower unit.
