1995 Johnson V4 115 hp

I got the newT-stats installed this afternoon. What a PITA!!! Somebody was drunk when they did the engineering on the motor as they were tucked behind the lower cowling. :shakehead: After the motor warms up you can touch the water coming out of the telltale. Both T-stats was clogged up, clean the housing really good since it had gunk in it. Now on to my next problem, the motor isn't idling properly. Put in gear runs fine, in neutral shuts off. What do I need to look for?

My Evinrude 90 (similar motor) has trouble idling in very humid weather, especially after it has had a long run. Does the 115 do it all the time?

If Humidity is effecting your idle I would look at ignition first....crank it at night no lights on muffs or in water of course...if you see any sparks anywhere theres your problem....sometimes you cant see cracks or pinholes in wires but at night you see a lighting show....or just replace wires and plugs... you could be do anyways? In the case of Robbies... it sounds more like clogged low speed jet somewhere....but could be ignition too...

Did you change those oily wet plugs?

So you pull it out of gear and it may chug or something and die?

The motor runs great at wot, however idling around the dock or trying to load the boat it would shut off. The motor would spit, sputtter, cough and run rough. Trey (caddman) came over yesterday, think we found the problem. The filter was full of trash from the gas tank and the carbs were clogged up. We cleaned the jets used a portable 12 gallon tank put fresh gas and oil hooked it back up and let run. Seems to help the problem. The previous owner abandon the under floor gas tank for reason evidently, my sister's boyfriend decided to hook it up had problems ever since. I should know how it runs today at the river, they're suppose to call me.

Well mI was going to say it sounds like it is lean, thats what happens when you unload it and it goes lean, it dies, anyway let me know if you didnt fix it

Alrighty!!! I got a call this afternoon the motor runs much better now that we are using the portable gas tank. So must have trash flowing around in the factory tank causing the motor to run bad. That will need to be pulled during the winter to check it. Now the next problem; they are getting a continous alarm after running for a while. I'm guessing still overheating, I just replace the T-stats cleaned all the gunk out of the housing had no issues at home. So maybe a leaky head gasket could cause this or trash in the water tube/jacket?

Both could cause it to overheat. I had overheating issues with my Merc that would not show up until I was underway. I could run it all day on the muffs with no issues. Dont know much about Johnson engines, but I would start with flushing it out real good. A compression/leakdown test might show you the condition of the head gaskets.
