21ft Starflite w/200hp ob Merc. What PROP should I being running?

Please read my previous postings (recently posted). Does anyone have a Starflite, or know what prop would be a good mate to this config?
My current prop info is listed in my other posting.
I could really use some input. Thanks for any and all replies.

I have the exact same set-up, I ran a 24 chopper - aluminum, over revd badly, I asked the same thing, and the popular reponses I got was a 26 Pitch Tempest 2 stainless steel. For skiing I got a 21 pitch aluminum, great hole shot, blows out around hard turns, overrevs, really the wrong prop. I would try the 26 pitch.

Hey guys... watch the props... The small hub props on a big gear case tend to get better high-end numbers, but loose in the midrange cruise due to slip from exhause gases running over the outside of the hub.
FYI...
odd number tempest have large hubs...23,25,27
even number ones have small hubs...22,24,26,28

My Starflight was running a 25p Tempest with a Merc 200XRi...6000rpm and 70mph on the speedo.

My '92starflite with a 200 xri.with the prop off of your boat (23 tempest) runs 6000 rpm @ 65 gps...one fat guy, one skinny guy and full gas...and gear..no jackplate.

Tbacha, Jrumon, Hoodlum,
Thanks for the information. It's good to hear from guys that have close to the same equipment.
So I'm thinking I'll avoid the smaller hub props and try something like a 25p SS Tempest.
My motor isn't a 200 XRI, it a plain jane 2001 200hp ob Merc with carbs.
*Does the XRI shell out more juice?
*Will I be ok with the 25P prop?
*On the scale of props where does a Tempest prop sit?
*Where should I pick one up (new/used) for a good value. Any ideas .
*Is the 92 Starflite hull the same as my boat? (mine is an 86ish)
*Am I likely to lose some top end from going from this small hub (I belive it's called a "big ear prop" 48 89856 A4 22P, that is according to: http://abiossa.gearhost.net/adamsdock/chopper.html) to a 25P Tempest prop with a full size hub?
Greg

StarflightVT..
The 200XRi does put out more HP & torque than the 200 carb, but if you are turning 6000@65mph, I would step up from your 23p to a 25p... however, if you find the 25P will only pull 5500@65mph, I would go back to the 23p for better holeshot and load carring abilities.

There is no "magic" out of the box prop to run... It's all trial & error so to speak... motor height, set-back, trim angle, etc. will all play a part in the performance...

Hey jrumon, you seem to have a brain. I have a 25p tempest on my 21 starflite with a 200 merc. I found the boat to be really slow out of the hole. Almost like the boat wasn't running on all 6. Then without warning it revs up and takes off. I had the 21p on it to begin with but it was great out of the hole but kind of sucked on the top end and it seemed to dance all around 6 grand. What can I do to get it out of the hole without it being so slugish? I had it trimmed down to far I am sure. I also have a hydraulic jackplate so any info would help out. I heard that some people drill holes in each blade. Is this true? Also what is the max rpm on a stock 200 merc 87 oil injected? Thanks!

Your rig may be suited for a 23 Tempest...a comfortable "medium" so to speak. Carb motors are kind of dogs on low end punch as compared to EFi torque monsters... I believe what you are experencing is just the nature of a carb motor... once it gets past about 2000rpm, the exhaust finally vents the prop and it revs real quickly...

As far as Holes in the Blades (NO!)... I think your refering to "venting" the prop in front of the blades... This applies to props with thru-hub exhaust only. By drilling a hole in front of the leading edge of the blade, it allows exhaust gases to be forced out when you punch it out of the hole causing the prop to have a controlled "cavitation" allowing the prop to slip and motor to spin up into a stronger point of the powerband... then the prop "bites" and you take off as usual.

Most of the newer merc props use this with small black plugs in front of the blades...The bigger the hole, the more exhaust gases will blow out into the blades. If your tempest has the plugs still, try pulling them out and run it...It should help with getting out of the hole.

As far as you jack plate height... you'll need to play with settings to find the right spot for launches, skiing, cruising, and top end... but make sure you have a water pressure gauge so you don't cook it! You'll need to play with your maximum height setting (for speed)... its a sweet spot at the point the motor is as high as possible AND the prop is still biting good. You know it on a GPS and tach... just make sure it has water pressure too!

Lovethemates2,

I just purchased a 23P Tempest on Ebay for $259.00. I should have it in a few days. I'll let you know how it performs on my 86 Starflite with a carb'd Merc 200 hp.
I know what you are talking about...(sounds/feels like the engine is missing on take off - on till it takes a bite of water)
Somone told me to go with the 25P but I think I'm going to be better of with the 23P.
I have a hell of a time trying to get out of the hole with 2, especially 3 people on board. Hope my new purchase will help. I don't have a jack plate. Currently I've got some kind of a smaller diameter hub'ed 22P big ear (chopper?) prop.
Greg

Invest in a jackplate... dollar for dollar, there's nothing like it for how the boat handles in EVERY aspect! Even an inexpensive manual one is OK, plus, you get the advantages of motor set-back...

When I have a question from now on I am going to ask you. Thanks for the advice. I do have a plug on the prop and I will pull it out to see what it does. I also have Bob's nose cone with the low water pickup and I have the water pressure gauge so I won't have a problem with the water intake. Thanks again! StarfliteVT, let me know what your boat does with the 23p. I may need to invest in one of those as well. The 21 just doesn't cut it but it will rip someones arms out if there on the back. Keep me informed on the boat. Do you have any pictures of your starflite on this website?

There is another way to ventilate a prop other than drilling "behind" the blade. You can put a stainless steel washer(s) between the thrust washer and the prop. This reduces what is called the labyrinth seal and allows the prop to ventilate more freely over the hub and brings the revs up quicker. A 25p large hub is a lot of prop to bring out of the hole without ventilation. It really does work. The more washers the more ventilation. You are limited of course by the shaft length.
