225HO Temporarily Dead

Was out the weekend before last and the motor just died. Not like ran out of gas died, it was total loss of spark death. Got towed in, dropped it off at the marina later in the week and got the call I was expecting - the EMM had died. They have sent it off to BRP because they have to pull all the data off of it to put on the new one and send it back. Very frustrating to know that for all the money it won't be any faster, or better in any way. Should get it back sometime this week. The bright spot is this is the first year in awhile that I didn't have reservations to go to the poker run at Lake Cumberland.
Thanks for listening while I rant.

I feel your pain!!! My 2001 johnnyrude died with only 30 hrs on the motor early last year. The EMM gave up the ghost, the good is that you shouldn't have a problem with the new one. I sent mine down to Alabama (http://www.dfitechnologies.com/) and had the EMM remapped.

Sorry to here about your motor. Is it still under warranty or is going to be out of pocket? I would guess an EMM is an expensive touch.

I just hauled my 250 Etec for the season. It was my first year with it and I was very pleased that it did not have a single issue and ran perfectly. Notwithstanding your bad news these motors seem very well built. I love the attention to detail under the cowl. I run it at the XD100 setting and have never seen a single puff of smoke. Starts instantly and idles at 500 RPM. I did a 70 mile run this summer and got 4.5 MPG. I didn't think that was too shabby.

I hope you get many trouble free years after this. On the Etec forum there was a guy with twin 200's with 2200 hours on each motor without an overhaul.

Thanks for the words guys.
DFI Technologies was the original plan of action, but they said because it is an etec they won't touch it. That's why it went back to BRP. It's a 2006, with less than 200 hours on it, but unfortunately no warranty - so the new prop and hydraulic jackplate fund will now return to $0.
I have been told that the new and remapped EMM's have almost zero problems, so I'm looking forward to getting back to enjoying it.

You got me thinking so I checked the parts website to see what an EMM is worth. It is the only part not listed. Apparently it is because it requires an exchange of the old one. I've heard a few stories of the older ones dying. Makes one pause. So what is an EMM worth without installation? Installed?

Mark I was told about $1800.00 for a EMM, but that was at a Evinrude dealer and it was at the beginning of 2010. I would think that's with a mark up.

E-Tec this

My 2009 250 E-Tec pushing a 24 foot Grady has had 2 lower units fail under warranty. Each lower lasted about 350 hours. I don't bump it in and out of gear; run to spots and anchor. The last replacement lower was on backorder and I was down for 3 weeks starting on 7/26/11. All 6 fuel injectors have had to be replaced. I run Startron in my fuel and yamalube oil. A lower unit for that engine sells for around $4600 and each injector costs $385. Bought the engine new with one week left on an available 5 year extended factory warranty promo. Got less than 1000 hours on it with 22 months of warranty left. Great engine when it runs right.

1000 hours in 2 years! You are making good use of it. (I wish I got out that often. I only put 35 hours on mine this year)
Still, that is way too many things go wrong. Glad you have the warranty. It makes us guys without a little nervous though.

I've been given an estimate of $1400 for the EMM, plus labor at the repair shop. So far they have an hour in for diagnostic checks and taking things apart. I'm guessing another hour to put everything back together and run checks to make sure everything else is ok.

New EMM arrived yesterday. Funny thing is BRP didn't include any info on what went wrong with the original unit which he indicated they normally do. When he called to question all they would say was that it had an "internal failure". Anyway, he put the new one on and she fired right up. I am picking it up this afternoon and hoping for a couple thousand hours of care free boating.
