250 SFX

Greetings. First post. Looks like a great forum.

I have owned boats of various types for over 35 years, and been boating my entire life. I am considering trading my existing boat (23 foot Rinker) for a 250 SFX (with 300HP Verado), and have many questions. Maybe someone here can help.

The boat that I have in mind is a 5 hour drive; seems to be no checkmate dealers closer to me. Though I have studied the 250 SFX on paper, I have never actually seen or set foot on one. Is there anyone on the forum in the mid atlantic (Washington DC/Annapolis) area that has one (or a Baja 250 sportfish)? If so.....might you be willing to let me take a look at it?

In any event, if there are any of you with firsthand knowledge of a 250SFX, could you answer a few questions?

1) There appears to be a locker in the bow; is this set up to be an anchor locker?
2) The head/dressing room area looks in the photos to be quite small and cramped. Is it comparable to other 25' center consoles?
3) Is the cockpit self bailing (overboard, not into the bilge)?
4) Are the rod holders long enough to accomodate 9" rods?
5) Is the in-floor storage large enough to accomodate skis?
6) The boat that I am looking at comes with a jack plate. Do you know if this is standard equipment, and is it needed on this model?
6) The boat that I am looking at comes with the large lenco tabs which make it impossible to use a conventional boarding ladder. The dealer says that the boat comes with a "side mounted" boarding ladder, but I can't see it in the photos. Is there a standard checkmate ladder that he could be referring to?
7) Had anyone installed a ski pylon on a 250 SFX?

We have a long way to go before I decide whether to pull the trigger on this, but the 200 miles makes it tough to go kick the tires, or to get an appraisal on my trade. I will run all of these questions by the dealer (and I will assume that he reads this forum), but I also wanted to get some input from other owners, if there are any. I welcome any general comments that other owners have regarding the 250 SFX.

I am quite familiar with Checkmate (and Baja) boats and history, and the latest asset purchase by GMP, etc. The 250 SFX is of interest because (I think, and I am confirming) that it is rated to safely carry 10-12 passengers (1600 pounds worth?), it is a center console but with some performance and comfort that other center consoles give up in exchange for fishing prowess. I don't need a serious fishing machine, but I do want performance in flat and rough water. And I need an OB.

Your comments are welcome.

I think the closest dealer to you would be http://www.tritonmarina.com/.
I don't know much about the boat in question but there guys on here from the factory that may be able to help you.
I can show you a bunch of pictures that may help answer a few of your questions like the ladder .

If you have her by the end of June bring it out to the Cheasapeake Bash for us all to check out.

Thanks Keith. Nice photos. Hopefully I will get some other info from others, but this does answer the ladder question. Not liking the ladder setup much, but it is not a big deal. Is this a standard checkmate ladder? Do you know if there are multiple mounting positions for various depths?

Triton is certainly closer than the dealer that i was directed to....but Triton has not SFX 250's in stock so I was directed elsewhere, I guess.......

I'll have to keep the chesapeake bash in mind.

Thanks again.

I believe they had a 250SFX on diplay at the Detroit Boat Show.

Also, one thing to keep in mind with Checkmate is that they will do some customizing on orders.

So depending on what your issue is with the ladder, you might be able to ask them to change it up a bit for you.

I can PM Denny from Checkmate for you if you like and see who has the 250SFX from the Detroit Boat Show.

It might be that the Checkmate dealer that was at the show has it in inventory, or perhaps Checkmate supplied it for the show display.

Of all the ex-Baja (now Checkmate) models I like the 250 SFX. It even somewhat looks like a CM, in my opinion. I would like to find a used one and have Randy do a "Wildman" job on it for a cool party boat. I'm sure those live wells could hold a lot of beer! Shoot, might even throw a 575 on the transom.....

Good luck in your search, 6104696.

very nice looking CC, it is one of the molds they got from Baja, so there are some baja versions out there, would figure quality on these to be much higher..

Lots of storage on this boat. The console is big enough for me to crawl into, and I'm a monster. The storage area under the floor in front of the console is huge, not sure if it will fit ski's though. The wrap around seating is an insert, you will not find it on a Baja, under the wrap around seats is more storage, it should be big enough for ski's.

Not sure what else I can remember about the boat, when I left we had only built the one.

Welcome to the board.

Thanks EZstriper. We are in Northern VA but these days we keep our boats out in Montross. Maybe I'll see you out in Colonial Beach or out at Tims II (it's been many years since we have been to tims, though......)

I went down to Tim's a couple times last year. I put in by the pentagon. I like these boats and wish they were in my range.

We keep our Gibson @ hope springs in aquia creek, usually go to Ricks and sometimes Tims II used to make the colonial beach run before fuel prices got out of hand...so stay closer to home now !!! Rob

Because of the extra space, nice line of the hull is this one of mine favourite too

Sadly it looks like I will not be able to join the ranks of the Checkmati this time around. We've confirmed the human capacity at 9 persons, 1300 pounds. It's just not enough for our needs....but otherwise we really like the boat.

Looks like we are gonna be stuck with more traditional center consoles or bowriders.

Thanks for all the comments and PM's. See you on the water. I'll be the guy with the crowded center console boat....wishing I could go faster......
