the next checkmate i'm buying is coming with a 1995 mercury 3.0 liter 225 XRI black max..... can any 3 liter powerhead go on this engine?? the engine is in great shape i think only about 300-350 hrs on it and the owner hardly ever takes it up over even 4-5k rpms... the ultimate goal is to have a 300x but new at 18k is a touch outa range... any suggestions?

I know that the Optimax 3L Engines won't just "bolt up" to the "X" or "XRI" motors without some modifications.

Before you purchase a new powerhead, I would give Eric Simon of Simon Motorsports in CA a call.

Good luck.

You should get a solid 270 HP with some mods. The motor can be a reliable motor and better balanced for a lot less then buying a 300. As mentioned call Simon, he can tell you how his motors are better then production motors. Of couse you can get more HP, I can't say how that added output effects the motor but I have heard that modified loopers built by Racer hold up very well, and he gets 300+ HP from 3 liter Loopers.

Oh, have you checked on a used, they don't make them anymore, Merc 250XB?

You can get them cheap, they push about 270+ prop HP and hold up very well. They do suck up a lot of gas though!
