I GOT MY HANDS ON A 1983 300 AND AM THINKING ABOUT FRESHENING IT UP AND PUTTING IT ON MY 88' STARFLITE. BEFORE I INVEST ANYTHING INTO IT IM JUST LOOKING FOR SOME FEEDBACK ON THIS OLD OUTBOARD. WHETHER GOOD OR BAD? ALSO HOW TO CONVERT FROM 25" SHAFT TO 20" OR 21" AND WHAT PARTS WILL INTERCHANGE WITH WHAT. I CURRENTLY AM RUNNING A 88' 200 2.5. CAN I USE ANYTHING FROM IT?

why convert it? just put a jack plate on it that will give you the right prop shaft height.....yet you wont want much if any setback w/ a heavy v8. that thing will fly w/ a 300 on it!!!!:cheers

my plate will go 7 inches.....that would be the prop shaft height. by the way- w/ a 300 you wouldn't need it anyway!!!!!!!!!

Those motors are not the best thing Merc ever put out and there is nothing that will fit off your old motor. Parts are becoming pretty scarce for the 3.4. You will not find many people running these anymore, but they are a neat ole V6..

The 3.4 was never one of Mercs. fast outboards. As stated, parts are getting scarce, and
is fast becoming a dinosaur. The '88 200 HP you have is a 2.4L not 2.5, but again... nothing
fits!

The 3.4 300 was never built as a "hi performance" motor. It was built to push heavy hulls around. It's a torque monster, not a hi revving screamer!

yeah what those guys said.....

i didn't buy a boat becuase it had 3.4 on it, they seem like a real bastard motor

my $.02
