454 Carburetor question?

What I mean when I say I can see where he's comming from, is that I am kinda in his same shoes. If my engine needed a rebuild and while I was in there I wanted to gain a few mph., I would rebuild it and I think I could do it for the 2500.00 he's wanting to spend. No, he's not going to gain anywhere near 10 mph or nothing but at least it would be a little better than stock. If you've got a good block and good heads (no cracks) I think you can rebuild a marine engine for 2500.00. and that's what the guy wants. He's not going to be able to get a new high performance exhaust system. But you can get new aluminum manifolds with risers on ebay for 550.00 a pair, definitly not the best but at least they're new and aluminum. I don't want to offend anyone...especially you Vinny ,you know I like you, but sometimes we need to help people do things within there budget. From all the people I know on here and 'heard' (saw) speak ,you would be my first pick as far as being a good mechanic and doing things right and doing things the very best, but everyone can't afford the best.
If it helps any...I think the guy is crazy for saying Checkmates ride poorly at high speeds, because mine rides like crap at anything but WOT.

speed

used a prop calc program
shows a 4500# hull
23' waterline length
1.5 ratio drive
3 bearings from gearbox to prop
7% prop slip
55 knots
requires 509 shaft hp
22p?prop
I would hate for anyone to leave this great board from a simple communication error.

Your best bet with that budget is to rebuild the engine stock with maybe a very small cam. Or save your funds untill you have enough to build it up write.

With my dealings with Checkmates they handle high speed very well. If you compare boats 1 Checkmate and 1 brand X the same length the Checkmate will hold its own ground every time. If your trying to compare a 25' Checkmate that runs 100mph against a 38' foot Fountain that runs 100mph yes the Fountain will shine.

Everybody knows the Fastest way to get speed is No weight. Every 100 pounds you take off in a race is a 1/10 of a second faster. The more weight you have the more engines you need and HP.

Siddhi,

I dont know whether you will read this or not, my guess is you will. I am not some inexperienced kid who comes on this board and talks for the sake of talking. I know what the hell I am talking about, just as you said, it is apparent that you dont. Your goals are unrealistic given the budget you stated. Now, you have changed your tune and will be willing to spend what it takes. You say I made no suggestions. I am the one who suggested you do a leak down test. If you would take the time to re-read post 18, you will see that I did make a valid suggestion for a solution. I suggested you get a stock Merc bobtail. If you had any time and experience on this board, you would know that I dont live anywhere near a lake. I run the ocean all the time. I never said that a Checkmate can run 100 + in rough conditions. There are few boats that can safely do that and none of us here can afford one. The fact remains, I do know of 3 Checkmates that run that fast, given the proper conditions.
Just who is this Pro Stock engine builder friend of yours? Has he done any engines for the Johnson family? Maybe Greg Anderson? Maybe he is Sonny Leonard or Bill Jenkins or Dick Maskin? Who's engine was he building the other day?
As far as you and I go, you are on your own. I am done with you. Its apparent you dont need any help anyway. Not that you want it from me. You have everything worked out. Good luck with your rebuild. Maybe you can post your results here and your final costs for the engine that will get you a 10 mph increase and still cost you $2500. Dont forget to include new exhaust! All would love to see it. That way, we can all copy you steps and go much faster with only a minimal payout of cash. The reality of going fast on the water or pavement is this.... IT COSTS ALOT OF MONEY!!!! Either spend it or go fishing!

As for the rest of you guys... If you agree with him, that I dont make valid and good suggestions, let me know. I wont post here anymore. I will be monitoring this thread for your replies.
For the few that I have gotten to know on a more personal level ( you know who you are) you know how to reach me if the rest want me out.

There's nothing I hate more than paying the hosting bill for someone to show up here and waste my bandwidth ripping on our other members.

This site is free to use because someone (namely me!) pays for it. The advice you get here is free and members are good enough to spend their free time helping out people, who for the most part are complete strangers! I think people should be very thankful that complete strangers dedicate some of their free time to typing and sharing their knowledge and by attempting to help others by giving advice.

So if you don't like the advice you get here, don't use it, don't read it, or get lost.

Why some people seem to think that they have some kind of "entitlement" to have everyone showing up here to solve their problems for free for them is beyond me.

If you don't like it here and don't want to be part of this community anymore, then there's a really simple solution.....

STOP DIALING UP THE DAMN URL AND WASTING MY BANDWIDTH AND MONEY!

Thread closed!

Edit....Here's a link to one of those Checkmates that are hard to handle at 70....
