I am looking into putting a 496 h.o. motor in my 1989 convincor gtx. Can any one tell me how this combo would work and round about costs. I now have a 454 330 in the boat.

Thanx

NOT SURE ABOUT COST BUT YOU ARE ADDING ROUGHLY 100HP OVER YOUR 454/330HP. SHOULD BE GOOD FOR LOTS OF BOTTOM END TORQUE AND AT LEAST 5MPH MORE TOP END. THE 496 HO IS RATED AT 425HP BY MERCRUISER.

It will run you about 10K for the motor plus install and I would expect 7-8 MPH on top end. You might have issues with your drive lasting.

Just make sure you get a complete bobtail motor. If you try to piece one together, it will end up costing you more.
Those 496 motors are very complicated. Each cylinder has its' own coil. Therefore, the engine needs a cam and crank sensor to work. The system works great when it works, but when it doesn't, it can be tough to diagnose. And don't even think of doing any modifications to it. You have to leave it stock. About the only thing you can do is upgrade the exhaust system.
Where are you getting the motor from??

I am getting the motor from my friend he owns reed channel marine in oceanside. He can do the motor for just under ten complete bobtail labor and all. I dont know if i should do it or is there any other options. I am looking for dependability and of course some more power over my stock 330. Thanx for all your feed back.

Cor: I'd go for it. That's a good price, installed (assuming it's new with warranty), and I wouldn't be surprised if you pick up a solid 10 mph. I picked up 16 mph on my ZT230 going from a 300 hp small block to the 496 HO and that's with a non-labbed four blade prop. Raylar.com does now make a head, intake and cam package for the 496 HO that costs around $5,000.00 and puts you at 525 hp for the inevitable time when the new speed isn't eanough either. Good Luck.

dont know much about em but theres a pair of complete 496s on speedwake. theyre located in MD. guy wants 7995 for the pair or 4200 each. doesnt sound like a bad price!!

just too far away for me!!

thanx guys but i got intouch with him and the motors are tentativly sold. But i told him if it falls through let me know. If you see any more deals please let me know

I do know of a modification for the 496 that has worked well all summer.. My shop whippled a pair of em, an do they scream! We installed them in a baja, went from 72 to 81mph.. There was a bunch of prop playing, and i dont remember where we ended up.. but i can find out if you like..
