$4k good price for this??

I'm not sure of the hours on this engine, but they shop guy is asking $4 thousand.

Outboard is a 1991 90degree V4 140hp Evinrude.
the price for 4k is a complete rebuild, new pistons, new rings, water pump, etc, everything replaced, bearings and all, rehoned block. The only things he re-uses are the block, the crank, and the connecting rods.

He said he would put a low water pickup on the engine, and a midsection exhaust dump.

Includes throttle linkages, wire harness for guages, and ignition. AND installation.

So for a complete re-build, i'm not sure a 17 year old engine is worth $$$4,000... but, a brand new 150 is 14,000!

by the way, this is for a 16' Diplomat that i just overhauled...

he said a 1 year full coverage warrenty. And basically the only exceptions of idiot rules like "oops, i forgot to add oil!" or smashin a skeg on a rock that he wouldn't cover.

Thats way too much IMO and my own experiance... Ive seen many rebuilt V6 or stock v6 and v4 with very low hours for under 3k. Check around you will find something better.

$4000 is really high for a 1991. Once you mount it on the Diplomat...that is about what the whole package is worth. But if he did a full rebuild he has a lot of money sunk into it, and if it really is a one year warranty then that is where the price is coming from. Still, not sure he is going to have an easy time finding a taker, especially at this time of year. That said, not a bad choice of motor for that hull.

Way too much money for that motor. You can find Merc. Power much cheaper and more HP for the money. Check Ebay also, there's been some good deals coming accross ebay.

I bought my old evinrude 140 for 1500 and it ran great. 4K seems too high. My 2.4 240hp is only worth about 3k.

ive got a mid 80s merc 200. good compression numbers .. all over 121 +3
new stator... lower unit shifts fine.. always had fresh lube. preety decent condition. could use some new wires.. and new fuel pump diaphram... 1000 gets it with power trim unit. and clamp/mounting bracket

GOOD ( No salt-water and clean-lo hrs) used motors are solid gold and hard to find but unless that one's been gold-plated that's way too high. A realistic price is about $2000-$2500 given the current market, the rebuild, and if he's willing to stand behind it. Book values are ONLY a guide.

Go to a dealer and even if they have a used engine ( a BIG IF) see what they are charging. Outrageous! But compared to new stuff it seems not so bad. The old supply and demand system at work here. And a seventeen year-old is still relatively new if it's a freshwater outboard. There are plenty of motors out there from the 70's and 80's that run just fine.

Price seems a bit high. I had a 2.4L built, the only parts re-used where the electronics. This was a drop on powerhead. Price was 2K.
I would keep looking.
