75psi on cylinder 5!

I have a starflite with a 220 xri 88'. I was winterizing it and checked the compression and found it to be 118-120psi across the board cold, except for cylinder 5 which would not produce over 75psi, i took off the heads and checked it out the block is in tact and the sleeve looks to be in ok condistion. My question is how much am i looking at to re ring, and re sleeve that cylinder including labour and all parts.

LOOK carefully!!!

The 88 is a 2.4L V6 with the aluminum coated cylinder bores. I have seen a LOT of 2.4L's cook a piston & rings with minimum cylinder issues. If you have the head off, look CLOSE at the bore... any small aluminum deposits can be cleaned off with muratic acid (carefully!!!).

Cheap fix>>> If your bore is OK, you can actually replace just the one piston & rings for that problem cylinder and IT CAN be done without pulling the powerhead off the boat (no need to split the case even). Total parts & gaskets about $300 + your time. NOTE: this is a band-aid fix and will last for years if not abused. BUT>>> you still have an issue to find WHAT caused it to fail on that hole???? Injector plugged for #5 and leaned-out, too hot, spark plug misfire, reed chipped off and enter bore, etc.

One the other side, you can have a fresh completely remanufactured shortblock with warrentee for under $2000...
 
ok thanks alot, probably wont be able to get to look at it till spring now. Its around -10 degrees here now. But ill take a look at it asap and post my findings once i do.

how are you supposed to change a piston without taking the powerhead off the boat? Maybe with a 7 petal front you could pull the intake and undo the rod bolts to get the piston out, but its going to be a bitch not to loose any of the bearings, rod bolts, etc. For the extra 20 minutes that it takes to pull a powerhead and split a case you might as well do that.
 
Cheap fix.... SOMETIMES!!!

Again, it depends on the bore! Once you pull off the reed plate (even on 5-pedal fishin' motors), you CAN get to the rod bolts easily with a long 1/4" drive extension and the proper socket, and YES, you have to be 100% clean and precise at what you are doing!

I have done a few of these fixes (5 motors) for friends with ZERO failures even after years of running. You do have to replace the needle bearings as well as rod bolts (plus the piston, pin, and rings). You only need a reed plate gasket (carbs stay on), and a head gasket.

Splitting the case or pulling the power head off defeats the quick fix idea... at that point, you my as well do a full rebuild. Again, this not something for anyone with weak mechanical skills... but it IS 100% do-able!!! JIM
