77 mercury 1500 fuel pump problem?

first off i cleaned the fuel screen cause the boat seemed like it was starving for fuel when you would go fast about 45 or higher slow back down to 30 it would run fine. after that now when i first start it(sometimes), it seems like the system wont hold pressure so i have to pump the ball while its running every min or so. but then after it has been running for a few mins (mosttimes) it seems to hold pressure. get up to about 45 and it will run good for a min and then starve, i slow back down to 30 will starve for a min then work it out of the system and run great. i also had it the other day i went to take off the gas cap and i had to use pliers to get them off so much suction in the tank, but it doesnt always do this. bad breather on the take, fuel pump, diaphragm any ideas?

a very common problem on all outboards is the "primer ball".....there is a check vavle in them that fails and can cause issues with the fuel delivery on the motor. they are cheap and its not a bad idea to replace them every so often. i'm not saying this is your problem but very well could be an issue. some others will chime in here shortly:thumb:

Take your serial number, go to your Mercury dealer ask for a fuel pump diaphragm kit for the motor...

fuel pump

yea ive had problems like this , rebuild the pump its easy and cheap to do and new primer ball.

I ordered a new check valve kit for it comes with diaphragm and put a new primer ball on it. Seems to stay running now haven't taken it out to see how it runs wide open. To much rain and working when its nice. Thanks for all the help

Suction in the gas tank- can't get the lid off?

If it is that had to get the lid off the gas tank I would think you have a problem with the vent on the tank. Are you using a portable tank?

It sounds like the fuel pump is working to me if it can create that much vacuum in the tank. Try a short run with the lid on loose so it can breath. Obviously you wouldn't want to do this test with a full tank and risk spilling fuel and a fire hazzard.

Let us know how it works out for you.

its a aluminium tank and it only does it when i put more gas in it every once and a while. i have ran it with the cap loose still had the problem with it not keeping prime. i think it may have been a combo of the primerball going bad and the diaphragm going out. i wouldnt think the primerball would affect the running wide open problem.

finally took the boat out yesterday seemed to run better but still has a little hesitation at full throttle. i guess i will have to deal with it for a while. its cool it still runs good up into the mid to hi 30
