82 Diplomat cosmetic restoration

That boat looks great! How is it holding up so far? Also how much Flitz do you think it would take to do a bow on a 253 Convincor? Do you think it would take a 2lb container?
Thanks
Brian

Hey diplomat I finally got all my products to do the buff job. Finished the top of the boat on Saturday mornning. I would easliy say I got about 5 hours on the top, and I havint even started the sides. I didnt get a finish like you did tho. I think my gelcot is in worse shape then yours. I gotta take some pictures tomarrow and Ill post them. I think I wanna do the whole process again tho. But just to make sure... you run the buffer at 2500rpm with the first coat of Aqua buff 1000 followd by Aqua buff 2000 followd by Flitz and last the Machine glaze? And between those processes did you wash your boat? On mine I wased between the 1000 and 2000 i dunno if that could have changed the look. And did you have a hard time applying the Flitz because its so watery. It hard to see where you applied and how much you applied.

Cosmetic restoration

Reading your thread on the cosmetic restoration...great job by the way!!! I too am finding it a bit difficult to locate a good quality brown color carpet as part of a floor job on an '84 Enforcer while it's laid up here for the end of the '06 season. I was wondering who you settled on for the item, and did it meet your expectations. Thanks for any info.

I bought the carpet directly from Syntec http://www.syntecind.com/ . Their brown match my original to the tee. I used their "traditional" line and I believe the color was 'walnut'. So far it is holding up great. I bought the heaviest weight they had, so it was a little tricky installing it (but really not to bad).

They sell to the public and price wise they were inline with everyone else.

Good luck

I went onto the Syntec website and then called the 800 number. The company discontinued the color :brown (walnut) 20 oz weight. Oh well, I see there are a few other companies in Georgia...I will request samples from each to compare.
Thanks for the initial lead.

Diplomat, how has this Aqua buff held up for you? I did mine 3 years ago and it looked great! But since it sits outside it is starting to oxidize again, much lighter then before. So I ordered some more Aqua buff and will go over it again.

Horseplay,
My check sits on a lift with cover all summer. Topside looks just as good, but my sides are fading again. I'll hit it with the Aqua Buff again this fall. Lucky for me I over bought my Aqua Buff supply, so I have plenty on hand. I also was pretty lax the last two years in re-applying wax and polish.

unfortunately once the surface of the gelcoat has had a lot of oxidation damage, it will always be more susceptable to oxidation damage if you don't keep it waxed... or clear coat it.

my black / metalflake 88 loked like grey chalk when I dragged it home. took a lot of sanding and then buffing before it really looked good but if lecft exposed to the sun and elements a lot it starts to lose the shine again. I clearcoated the sides last year and will probably do the top this winter. doing it right takes a lot of careful prep work, but I know a guy with one on the river that was done at least 10 years ago that you'd never know... in fact it's probably shinier than new gelcoat.
