84 Diplomat Stalling

Hi,
New to the site. I have an 1984 diplomat with a fresh 85 140 Evinrude. I have this intermittent problem where I lose fuel pressure (it seems) I have to squeeze the shit out of the ball to get it back underway again. I had a broken o-ring in the filter, but that wasn't the problem. The only thing non stock is a 2 way valve for an aux 6 gal tank I squeezed in. I don't believe I'm sucking air anywhere. Question. Can I put a low pressure fuel pump to alleviate the problem? Is the fuel on a draw basis? A friend of mine suggested replacing the fuel lines from the tank to the motor? Ideas?

I don't know much about outboards, but I think there is a diaphram fuel pump on the motor. If it is cracked, it will not suck fuel properly.
 
If the bulb is sucked in, or there's no fuel in it when you first start pumping it, then your fuel pump is OK and you have a restriction in the lines or tank.
If the bulb is full of fuel and pumping it gets the motor running better, then it looks like your problem is upstream. Check the fuel pump. It's also possible you got some crap in the fuel lines and now the jets are clogged in the carbs, and pumping the bulb helps the fuel pump force fuel past the crap. Also check the carb float levels. Maybe the float isn't set properly, and you're running the bowl out of fuel.

If after cheking all the stuff JW sugjested and you still have a problem then its the factory pump on the motor. I had a problem like that on my merc. I installed a carter electric pump. Factory set at 4-6 PSI. Cured my problem and no more squeezing the bulb to prime the engine. Also makes it mine to drain the tank and the end of the season.

It's not as easy as all that. It starts fine and will run somedays just fine all day. Other days it will start fine fine and rev fine in neutral, but when I go to accel it dogs or dies altogether. I give the ball a few pumps and it will start under way again.
I'd like to just put an electric pump on it and quit squeezing balls. What is involved to bypass the fuel pump on the motor?

Its easy to by-pass the fuel pump on the motor. The pump on the side of the motor as an inlet and an outlet. When you run the new line from the electric pump run the hose to where the discharge from the old connected to at the carbs. I would also install a water seperator and filter. Both should be on the inlet side of the new elect. pump.

I AGREE, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND LEAST EXPENSIVE THINGS YOU CAN DO. IS BUY A WATER SEPERATOR/FUEL FILTER. 3 WEEKS INTO MY 1ST SUMMER WITH A IN LINE FILTER IT LET A PEICE OF DIRT THRUE LARGE ENOUGH TO STICK A FLOAT OPEN IN ONE OF MY CARBS ALLOWING RAW GAS TO DUMPED TO THE MOTOR STALLING IT.DEAD IN THE WATER IN MIDDLE OF THE DETROIT RIVER. INSTALLED A SEP/FILTER AND NO PROPLEMS FOR OVER 10YRS NOW. MERC 245
 
The filters should be after the electric fuel pump. You can put a strainer before the pump, but the secondary filter should be after, Electric pumps are designed to push well but they dont suck very good.

I agree with F150GT, you need a screen type filter before the pump, (inline type, to keep trash out of the pump) but definitely a good filter aft of the pump. A water separator type will work well for that. Also, you may want to make sure your anti siphon valve isn't sticking. You can determine this by opening or loosening the filler cap when the ball sucks down. If it's sticking, you will hear air rushing into the tank when you loosen the cap. Another thing that will ease or eliminate problems is to remove any quick connectors in your fuel supply line, replacing them with regular hose barb fittings. They are considerably mmore restrictive than regular hose fittings, and have much greater potential for air leakage, especially with age and use.

you should check your fuel lines if there crackes or old i would replaces them I had problemes before , the lines where coming apart from inside causing like a black powder and blocking the filter and loosing all pressure , if you can put on new filters and try a diferent fuel line ...good luck
