86 Exciter Resto

Running 200hp EFI with 5 1/2" setback. This is the 3rd motor on the boat after having "problems" with 2 different 2.4's.

Good hole shots and top end is 72ish GPS. Two people light fuel.

How high were you running the prop when trying to plane? Running it higher will make it plane faster and easier.

I tried all different heights before. All the way up all the way down and every where in between. Nothing seemed to work, but I wasn't able to the prop spinning because no exhaust was exiting through it. Since I have tapped and plugged the exhaust relief holes, I can get on plan much easier. I'm going to try it one day this week and see how it goes.

Hey Ram, I'm updating the stereo in my Exciter and I'm wondering how you put your's in the center of the dash. My boat has a center support in the way. Did you modify the structure underneath the dash?

I did have to slightly modify the center support. I put the stereo low enough that I only had to cut an inch of the bottom where it sweeps down. The center support comes down the middle of the top deck and tapers slightly larger as it gets closer to the dash. At the dash it sweeps down like an upside down knee support, of which I cut an inch off to allow the radio in and it gave me something to screw up into for mounting the stereo.

Hope that helps.

DOH! You're right, it looks like the horsey is going really fast in reverse. Didn't even notice til you said something. Time to reorder and get out the heat gun. :(

I never even thought about the horse head before installing. I had tunnel vision and getting them layed out perfect was the only thing I had on my mind:irked: I guess I need two new logos...

Boat still looks gorgeous in the pics and I can't wait to see it in person. Gonna try to slap a coat of wax on mine before you guys come up so I don't get shown up.

Ram's boat looks as good in person as it does in the pics. I love a blue boat anyway, and the flake in the silver really sets it off, especially when the sun hits it.

Blue and silver metalflake ALWAYS look good on a Checkmate!
You have done a fantastic job on this boat, I have been busy working on my own boat and missed this thread. I really like the white gauges against the black dash.

Finally got around to installing the new hydro steering. I went with the Seastar instead of the Baystar, because I like to overdue things, and my engine puts out more then 150hp:D Also, this would allow me, or a future owner, to install a larger engine and not need to upgrade the steering. I used Teleflex bulkhead style hoses and blinged them out a little with some chrome bezels. Here are the pics...

That boat has come along way. All looks real clean. Great job, can't wait for some more seat time in it watching numbers!

Thank you for the kind words:cheers:

Any time you're heading this way, let me know and we'll take a ride. Wife and I are thinking about heading down to the Chesapeake for a long weekend this fall. I'll let you know when and where, so hopefully we can meet up... If not, I'll see you next year at the "Checkmate Weekend"

BTW- I saw 67 last weekend on GPS, but the conditions were terrible and was forced to run in a short area. That was with the 25p Tempest plus and just me, almost full on gas and standard gear. I would just start to get her dialed in and would have to turn around and run back. I'm still thinking 70 with the right load and conditions.

Let me know if you come this way. We like staying out overnight in the fall when its cool at night. I'm ready for another bash now. Seems more guys from the area have popped up lately, I think it will be bigger next year.

Wheel and rigging look first class. Like I said before that boat looks top notch.

:bigthumb:

How is the back seat coming along or did I miss it in this thread.
