89 Checkmate Spectra?

I think he's incertain of what he has. Add says 225 with carbs, tech specs box says 220 with carbs. Either way when a test run is denied it's time to walk away.

Here was his response.....

Let me know what it is you're looking to "test". It runs, idles, shifts, steers, accelerates etc as it should. The condition is as described. I have a 219 100% perfect Ebay score. The reserve is $4800, so if you bid above that, I'll take you for a quick test drive and if it doesn't do as described, I'll remove your bid. It's on the trailer at my cottage and the launch is 5 miles down the road. So it's a bit of a task. If you are serious and do bid above $4800, I can have it in the water and on my dock if we have a specific time to do so. Thanks.

My Response was.......
So essentially, your asking me to opt into a binding contract through ebay before even taking it for a water test? Seeing that you have a 219 100% ebay score, you should be well aware that the conditions binding in said "bids" on auctions. I'm more interested in taking it out with you before I make a bid on the item. Is there something that your not telling me in your sale? 5 min down the road to a ramp with another boater is hardly a "task"...

Can I have your name and number to talk to you about this boat? By the way, I'm hardly out to joyride... And I'm surely not going to pay $4800 and have you retract my bid if the thing sinks, blows up, or gets struck by another boat god forbid. It should be represented clearly in its sale its condition, but your response is leary. Noone buys a boat EVER without a test ride. Unless your picking up a resto project that has no motor.

Boo YA! Look out Jimway, we got another horse in the running.:rof:

And the fun insues.....
His response~~~
This is Ebay, not BoatTrader.com or a boat dealership.
I've bought over $100k of boats and cars and have never asked for or had a test drive.
I READ the description carefully, decide if I want to bid on said item, bid on it and if I win, I pay and pick it up.
If it's as described, I leave positive feedback, if it's bad I leave negative feedback. That's the program.
220 times I've had positive experience... batting 1000. But it's not for everyone.
Good luck.

My Response~~
Assuming from your arrogant response, this must be why your selling this one. I'm guessing since you bought it online and didn't take the proper procedure to test it out before hand, you've gotten burned. And plan on passing on the hunk of crap to the next man. You should be ashamed of yourself. And just to let you know, NO-ONE cares about your Ebay rating. Especially seeing that you bought a bunch of stickers, rearview mirrors, and toolbags. Nobody asked about how you get pretty little stars next to your name. I'm interested in your snake oil salesman approach to selling at an online auction. I'll be sure to forward your messaged to Ebay HR and also spread the word to all about this sale. You forget that the boating community is vast and wide, and we tend to not let trash float our way. And when we find it, we pick it the hell up. So, hopefully my efforts can save the next man. I'm going to throw a curveball guess out there and assume that the title isn't in your name and its already signed too from another state?

This is too much fun~~~

I am absolutely floored to think that someone might purchase a boat, bike, car, truck, or similar item without listening to it run, etc, etc. I understand buying one in non running condition and have done so many times but you still get to look and inspect and talk to the seller, and the purchase price tends to reflect this. I like the boat but one persons idea of 'runs good' and the rest of our opinion might be different. In fact, I think that word sums up the situation, "Different"

Hes still going... Complaining and what not. Now name calling has insued.

Oh well, either way. There wasn't too long ago, that I would of gotten over excited and jumped at an opportunity like this. Hopefully this crosses someone somewhere to help them in their purchase adventure. Live and learn, and spread the knowledge.

I know that the guys at this site and others have helped me drastically, and there is always a rotten apple in the bunch. I prefer to keep the boating community the way it is. Filled with good people, that have great intentions. And the occasional side-show freak with a good heart.

I'm sorry this deal went to crap. Some sellers are just pricks. BTW, those aren't just cracks in the gelcoat, those are cracks in the fiberglass.

The motor cover is an interesting twist, definatly get the serial and run that number, might not even be that size of motor.

Great running boat. 1996 225 Merc with carbs rebuilt, new throttle and gear control, new 40 gallon aluminum fuel cell, new gas gauge, new 23" Mirage stainless prop, Lower unit rebuilt in Dec 2011, manual aluminum jack plate. New trim motor. Started first turn after being winterized.

The boat has a new swim ladder, new hardware and lightpost from Checkmate. Newer white vinyl seats and comes with cockpit cover and new entire boat cover for storage. Under the deck there are large white vinyl pads for sleeping or to use on deck for tanning. The boat could use a buffing and new carpet which I had a quote of $250. It does have some rub marks on the one side from a dock but nothing structural. The hull, floor and stern are rock hard solid and the boat is bone dry at the back. It looks great for the age and works awesome. This package is $60k to replace.

The trailer is a new 2008 Heritage that I just bought from the Checkmate factory last fall. They had used it for demo rides and never licensed it. It's a beautiful trailer with bunks, welded step/fenders and surge disc brakes. The bow post needs to be adjusted to boat.

Boat located in Finger Lakes in NY for pick up.
Clear title (in my name) for Boat and Trailer.

Note:
The Garmin on dash was removed and does NOT come with boat.
The Merc cowl cover says EFI for elctronic fuel injection which it is NOT. It's tri-carb in 1996. I took the boat in for winterizing and they put the wrong cowl on my motor. Looks great and fits so I left it.

I don't think his boat isn't rock solid according to this picture:
