89 Convincor GTX owners manual

Anyone know where i can find or view (online) the factory owners manual for an 89 GTX? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Keith,
Thanks for replying. Actually I am trying to straighten out the wiring under the console as weel as the interior lighting, etc. Trying to figure out exaclty how Checkmate may have wired the boat as it is evident the wiring has been changed over the years. One question though, there is a pull out knob under the 4 switch panel that I'm not sure what it does. It has two positions, pull it out one notch and it powers something, pull it out to the end and it powers the headlights (docking lights). Is this a stock switch or was it added by a prior owner?

Thanks,
Ron

Yes, the second link looks just like mine, panel with 4 left/right lighted toggles, power point, and pull out switch knob. Trying to determine the original pupose of the pullout knob. See pic, the knob (hard to see) is just left of the power point under the switch panel.

Thanks

That pic is of Ross's boat. I'm sure him or someone else can answer your question. Mine does not have that, guess they changed it in between years. Looks like you have a few extra guages going on there too.

Yeah, boost and fuel pressure guages. The trim tab indicators never worked. I think I'm going to replace them with a GPS screen. I just talked to the Checkmate factory guys and they say they never had a model specific owners manual that illustrated what everything did. So it's anybody's guess as to what may be original or an owner add-in. They did say they would send me any and all literature they might have for that year GTX. That might help identify what came stock on the boat.

Again, thanks for your help.
Ron

my 87 diplomat had a switch like that. when pulled out to the first notch it powered the anchor light, when pulled all the way out it powered the navigation and anchor lights and i believe the gauge lights as well

Thanks. The confusing part is the 4 bank switch panel has a switch for nav and anchor lights. So I'm still not clear on what the first notch does. I know the second turns on the headlights. Were these standard or an option on the GTX?

not much help here, first off my boat doesn't have docking lights...and second, the PO re-wired the dash when he replaced the guages so this "switch" you guys are talking about is disconnected on my boat. wish i could be of some help:irked: maybe "ezstriper" could have some insight??? or maybe "dogschool"??????

I think you'll find like alot of us here did you'll be doing some rewiring. The wiring is not the best on the older models and then you throw in a owner or two before you. Probaly best if you just get in there and take some time to sort it out and redo it so you know its good. A good winter project! Although you did make me think it is probaly for the head lights if you have them, I don't on my year and thats why I don't have that switch!

Good luck

i just went out and did some looking around on my boat, when it was rewired the PO wired the rear light onto the same switch as the dash lights and the bow light. BUT its a dual position toggle switch. now that being said, i traced the wire coming from the original "pull out" switch and it does go to the rear light! also....the "pull out" switch on my boat only feels like its a single position switch which would only turn this light on and off. the reason for that in my opinion would be for over night stays, you could leave it on with your bow and dash lights off....i might be wrong but thats the best logical answere i can come up with:thumb::cheers:

Ross has strong points there. Now it could be possible that the original
switch failed and a PO had the two position switch on hand and used it
rather than buying the correct one.

89 GTX Console wiring

Good Morning,

I'd like to thank all you guys for your comments and suggestions!! Looks like the best suggestion is to "rewire" what I can and straighten out the mess. I was hoping to keep it as original as possible, but you're right, prior owners have already changed too many things around and its anyones guess as to what is original.

While on the topic if lighting, where do you guys have your batteries mounted? The PO installed two batteries under the right side rear bench, leaving little storage space and along with the shore power charger on the same side, all this weight causes the boat to list on the starboard side. There's plenty of room behind the bench in the engine bay and the port side is completely bare. I'd like to move the batteries to better distribute the weight. Any insight here would be greatly appreciated.

Hope I can return the help some day!!!

Thanks

my batteries are also mounted under the rear bench. the reason for this is simple.....if your batteries die on accident and they are under the sunpad in your motor compartment, how do you get to them to charge them? your hatch wont GO UP:eyecrazy:

On to the batteries

Yep, I thought of that too. I've seen where many HiPo boats have three batteries, one or two for starting and accessories, and one dedicated to the stereo and amps. I've seen many pics with the batteries in the engine bay, they must have a backup under the seat or not have the powered hatch. I would just like to balance the boat better and retain some storage space.:)

Thanks

Mine are also where yours are. I know what you mean as far as wanting it even. Mine has a manual release cable for the hatch. Check your hatch for a cable going in it. If not then consider moving your batterys but hooking up charging points under the seat. Like race cars have, the jumper posts sticking out of the bumper. If your not understanding I can find a pic of what I mean.

Great minds thinks alike. I thought of that too, the charging points. I do not have a release cable. What does yours do? Pull the pin out of the latch? Was this a standard safety feature?

Ron, I do know some about your boat....at one point had a big blower motor in it, before the guy you bought it from got it...he completly disassembled the boat and redit it...did a nice job. guess still has a mild 502 in it ? also does it still have the nose cone on the bravo drive ? I had talked to him(can't remember his name right now..CRS) that it's hurting performance with this setup...have to be able to run 80+ before it's a +, as far as the wiring is concerned, just go in and separate the harness, trace out to see what you have and where it goes...had to do it on my 251 and now my 253. I only run 2 batteries and put them on both sides to balance the boat out. heres a pic of my 251, kinda hard to see..I had a scoop so I could reach thru to release lift if there was a issue..make sure if you run both batteries in the engine compartment(which I did) you run cables under the seat to jump if batteries go down...

That fuel filler tube looks kinda scary laying on the battery. Hope it never sparks or the ethonal eats at that tube.

The cable pulls a spring loaded release that unhooks it from the ram. I have pics of it on here some where i can find if you would like to see it.
