A 283 project just getting started

Problem Child

After selling my 235 to Lynchmob (Brian and Emily) in September I finally bought a 283 hull with. 117 hrs in Nj a few weeks ago with plans of rigging it and hopefully be able to enjoy it this summer . Then I picked up a Gen V Merc 600sc that Ron (Gimme "money"Fuel) nicely told me I should buy even if it was just to put in the garage as an ornament. This motor has 145 hrs and in almost new condition. I also bought a Merc racing motor plate , a 26 p Mach 4 Blade, a 28p Bravo , oil coolers, msd dist and ignition, water bypass and quite a few other goodies from the guy in Nj. Over the past couple weeks I have just been collecting parts I need to get it rigged such as a coupler, new starter, batteries, all new stainless fasteners , seawater pump . A set of Hardin Cyclone stainless exhaust should be here within the next couple days along with a new drive shower . I am hoping to drop the motor in within a couple weeks and try to get it rigged after I run down to Oh and pic up a larger trailer. I will have the aluminum I beam trailer for sale cheap that the boat is on now but just a little undersized for the 283 imo. Now I will attempt to put up a few pics but no guarantees lol.

Cant wait to see the finished product on the water and running Jeff!! Let me know if I can be of any help with pics again! I keep telling Ron that I might have to make a trip up to his neck of the woods to kick a few back and stupervise him getting some work done on his beast. Might have to do the same with you!

Thank you kindly Dream4. It has not been in the water since 2003 so in need of a good polishing. The po had a Whippled superchiller 502 in it last and has owned it for 21 years. He is now into Harleys and sold me the boat for $7200. Its not perfect but pretty nice for a 92. Droptop you will find yourself in a bbc boat if you keep hanging out at Maryland offshore. Trust me on that !!

Dude, this thing is bad a$$!!!!
Love that 600 sc!
Was there ever a factory boat built like this?
What do we think the speed will be?

Thanks guys for the compliments. No velvet drive for this rig Jeff , just starting out with a Bravo 1/ HP transom assembly and see how long it last . With my driving it should be good for at least a weekend lol. I am only aware of 283s with a 525 but would think someone would have ordered one at some point . Not sure on speeds being a 1992 it does not have the notched transom and will lack in speed vs a 97 and up I believe. I have a couple friends with quite different opinions so I am thinking into the lower 70 mph range and any more will be welcomed. We plan to run some bigger waters up here on the Great Lakes and looking more at the stability of this hull and yet small enough for our local sand bar hangout. Going tomorrow night to pic up a larger aluminum I beam triple axle for a great price then after this holiday weekend I should be able to start to put it together. Stay tuned.

Well I finally made some time to work on the 283 yesterday in between 2 graduation parties. My son and I dropped the motor in and bolted it up. I used a very large picker style hoist and with the blower and carbs being so tall we had to pull some wheels off the trailer and drop it down. We also installed it from the side to avoid puling the sun deck(this thing easily 2-300 lbs) but glad we did. Now I can start to to finish putting it together. With any luck we are hoping to be enjoying it early July .Plenty still to do and with working 70-90+ hrs a week it has been a bit tough to make any headway. I have been talking with Kunkles to build me a fuel system, Coolant rigging and button up any loose ends to get me on the water. Thats all for now . Thanks for being on board !

Thanks Hadley. I will be taking the boat to Kunkels this Wens to get it rigged. They do extremely good work and there is no way I would be able to get the boat on the water otherwise for this season. This is the busy season of my construction business and working way to much for this project. I can not wait to see it get finished up.
