Accessing Gauges

Bill W

New member
I have a 1993 28' Convincor. I want to remove the bezels from the gauges to change their color. With the limited room behind them, how do I get them out? There are 15 gauges to be taken out and I can only get to maybe 6. I have dropped the ceiling panel and even that hasn't helped very much..

Any and all advice or suggestions are welcomed...

Thanks!

BUMP!!!!

I'm really stuck with this problem.. HELP!!!!!!

Do you have cabinets at the top inside the cuddy cabin? If so, look in there and see if it opens to the guages (mine is). Either way you may have to remove the cabinet from the inside to access the guages. I just finished replacing my cuddy cabin door and I had to R&R the cabinets and walls to get to the bulkhead bolts. Once I took out the starboard cabinet, it opened up accessibility to most, if not all the guages from the inside. I didn't really look close but I think they are secured from the rear. Someone will correct me if that is not right.

Don't know where you are but one suggestion is either wait till its cooler or get you a big fan. It get hot as ..... inside that cabin.

any way you could post a couple of pics? it might help.

I can try to take a couple of pics from inside the cabin to show what I'm dealing with but I don't know if the problem can be seem in a picture. It's raining today so it will have to be another day!

First off, I'm in New Jersey where I do my boating mostly on Barnagat Bay!

I do indeed have cabinets in the cabin and that's where the problem is. Every thing I need to get at is BEHIND them..There is a hinged access panel to get to the fuse block and I can get to some of the 15 gauges in there but the others are impossible to reach. I think you are correct and I will have to undertake a monumental job of dismantling the cabinet work that's in there..

Thanks for your time, I appreciate it!!

My starboard cabinet was attached by about 10 2" screws on the bottom of the cabinet and two or three on the side. Once you remove them the whole cabinet should come off. It will probably be wedged in between the side of the boat and the end of the inside bulkhead (mine was tight as hell). I have attached a couple of pics of the port side cabinet to give you an idea what it looks like (at least it's similar to the starboard side). If you can't open them I will have to upload my whole file, unless someone will post them direct. You may have to copy and paste them to a viewer. Let me know if you cant get them and I will try another way.

I was unable to view your photos.. I am about to attempt to post the pictures I took..

Don't know if your interior is like mine but here is what you will ultimately see.

Remember this is the portside cabinet. The helmside cabinet will have more screws in it. Probably a double row on the bottom of the cabinet.

This should work.

Thanks to everyone who offered help.. I had a friend of mine who was a cabinet maker take a look and he determined that the ONLY way to get at the gauges was to dismantle the cabinets.. He offered to tackle the job for me but it will have to wait until the off season..
