So over the weekend I was out boating after picking people up I just got plane and was trimming up when the boat came "out of gear". At the time I thought it just sucked air so I backed out of it trimmed down retry. Nothing but revving. No reverse. At this point I'm thinking shift cable since I heard no grinding chunks or anything put of the ordinary. Brought it home removed the lower unit and the cable is fine. Mechanism seems to be working properly. What is my next move? If I spin the u joint should the prop spin with it? I know I'm not the most knowledgeable with things but I am mechanical just not sure about this lower unit yet

take the top cap off and take a look at the top gear. sounds like its stripped. or put the boat in forward and try spinning the prop you shouldn't be able to spin it in one direction. put a little umph behind it when you try and spin it the other way, if you can its a spun gear.

Are you sure you didnt rip the hub out your prop ive had that happen if it was gears yiu woud have heard hell tearing up back there unless yiu ripped the center out your drive coupling but prop hub easy to see

Not necessarily. We stripped out the top gears of a Mercruiser outdrive (pre-Alpha) and it didn't make any funny noises at all until forward motion simply stopped one afternoon.

Same thing has happened to me twice the first time no noise what so ever the second time just one quick zing then quiet, both times top gear stripped out of the alpha drive.

My first time out with the persuader was almost similar. All was as it should be as we were making our way out of the no wake zone. Temp good, oil pressure, good, then as we finally pass the no wake bouy I slowly give it some throttle and the nose goes up as it should but no foward acceleration. At that point I started buggin' and wondered what the hell. So with some disappointment we trailered it back to the shop and I started to go over it again. What I found was the lower shifter cable on the engine was loose and way out of adjustment . So when you would put it in foward gear the prop would spin when you ran it on the hose put the cable was not pulling it enough foward to totally engage the gear and lock up the prop. Boy was I relieved that was all it was. Only thing is that this was two weeks ago and I won't get another chane to try it out till the weekend after next. Sucks being so busy. :(

Sounds like engine coupler to me, my alpha one did same exact thing last year. I pulled engine high enough to get back flywheel cover off and replaced it over the boat and dropped it right back in. I would definitely check your alignment when you put a new one in. You can check this by getting a flash light. The shaft on your drive should be spinning at all times even if in neutral, if its not spinning it's the coupler, if it is then you have outdrive problems.

Thanks for all the help guys I checked the peep is all good as well as the shaft coming from the motor is spinning all the time I remember seeing it move while doing on water investigation but I did double check I guess I'll be removing that cap for a look at the out drove tonight:sick:

Yes both gears were completely smooth. I see you can buy the gears is this something that I can replace? I have no problem getting anything I need as I work in mold shop
