Another 2800SX Resto

Ramifications

Well-known member
As many of you know, I picked up 2tonchevy's 2800SX and will begin the process of finishing what he started as well as making the boat what I want. I will start with the few pics I have so far, but will get more posted as I get to it.

First up - I need to get the boat in full working order. The port side midsection is broken - The boat came with a new mid to replace the broken one, but it still needs to be installed along with reinstalling the lower unit.

Second up - The starboard side hydraulic steering ram is leaking, so that will need to be rebuilt. I plan to send both of the rams back to Latham to have them rebuilt.

Third on the list is finding latches for the drop out bolster seats. The seat and hinge are intact but there is no latch to hold it up. Any suggestions on where to look would be appreciated!

Not really prioritized yet, but some of the other things I will be doing

Wash, buff and wax
Go through all wiring and tighten everything up to my standards
Better secure the seats to the floor
Make sure all screw holes are sealed properly
Rebuild the cabin - total rebuild and design
Rebuild the backseat to match the factory design

Here are some interior pics of the boat I took tonight while I was surveying the situation a little closer. I plan to get the mid replaced and install the lower unit this Sunday. If all goes well and I wrap it up at a decent hour, I will test fire the engines. I hope to have time tomorrow to get the steering Rams off and shipped to Latham for a rebuild.

In a couple years I will consider that... unless something happens to the current engines before - But I was thinking 400r's! would that be too much power?! :D

Timing is an interesting animal, there are a number of guys pulling 300 verados and xs's right now to put 400r's on. There will likely be a window of time when you can get a better deal on low hour used 300's and it is likely just starting now. The hard part is knowing how long it will last and how low it will drive the motors.

I had about an hour and half tonight to work on a few things. I got the steering Rams pulled and boxed for shipment to Latham and got some work done on the mid section. I was able to get the old mid dropped out, removed the exhaust can from the new mid and swapped over the solid mounts to the new mid. If I have time Saturday evening, I will get the old gasket cleaned off and install the new mid and lower unit. Hopefully she fires right up!!

Latham gave me a 3-5 day turn around on the Rams, so hopefully I am taking a test ride next weekend!!

Here are a few options for the drop out bolster - something to latch it in the up position. What does everyone think would be the best option?

Maybe two of these per seat - one on each side?

Or two of these per seat - not sure this would hold without occasionally coming undone...

or these, but again, not sure it will hold

or something like one of these with a cotter pin

Any input or a picture of your setup would be greatly appreciated :bigthumb:

A stainless spring latch each side would be simple and strong. They cost about $12 each x 4 . Maybe etrailer.com would have them. Your going to be crushin waves before you know it . Good luck !!

I would have loved to have gotten my hands on this mate, --- she is one big beautiful slut red boat

Congrats Spencer, --- gonna love watching this resto thread.

Does anyone know the history of this hull? It was obviously raced. Maybe I missed the story somewhere on here?
