Anyone running or watching The Shootout?

We've got full blown Shootout fever up here at the Lake. My neighbor is texting me at work to let me know what big boys are already testing the water, "silver catamaran possibly MTI, full cockpit canopy just went screaming by". Tomorrow night is the street party on the strip and Saturday morning they start running. Last year's Top Gun Dave Scott (Nauti Marine Mystic ran 208 mph) is sitting out this year so it should be interesting to see who steps up (rumors of some serious Skaters w/ 1700's and at least one turbine powered boat). My Predictor is too small to run (must be 22') but is anyone else going to throw down some passes? Anyone else going to watch? I'll definitely be playing in the swells of the crowds leaving (best chance all year to practice unpredictable big water).

Talked to a buddy of mine yesterday and he was heading out today. Said he was going to pull his 46' Skater out of the water for street party and then back in for the shootout and Skaterfest activities.

Should be fun, I got jammed up at work and no way I can go, but next year I am sure gonna try.

A lot of scuttlebutt about who will win Top Gun over at OSO. I am interested to see what the new 388 Skater with 1700 Sterlings is gonna do. That thing should be crazy if they got it hooked up and dialed in.
 
208 mph is tuff to beat set in a 50 ft mystic for 2010, and holds it for 2009 at 196 mph. It will be intresting to see who wins.
 
Day 1 done and current top speed is 201 mph with a twin turbine powered 48' MTI named "My Way". Fastest piston powered is Chip Romer's Skater with 187. Hoping to see some faster times tomorrow as the crowds thin and water calms.

Is that 187 from the twin 1700's,, No offense but I hate turbine crap just does not seem real. I was never a fan of the jet cars at a drag strip either. Nothing is more awesome than a piston powered engine on the verge of a big screw up clicking off big numbers.

I thinking about going next year, I would really like to see this
 
The turbines are a novelty but fast on the water is still fast on the water (and the heat signature rising from the exhaust is quite a sight). There were only two turbine boats running and one of them caught fire so although turbines might win Top Gun overall, they are only a small percentage of the boats running. There was a 100mph+ pontoon yesterday, a v-bottom Black Thunder (very cush cabin where adults can stand tall) ran 129mph. Just getting out and motoring around to see the hardware is incredible: MTI's with twin 1350's running 168, 4-engine Big Thunder Skater that drinks fuel faster than it can be served, the spectator fleet that ranges from 65' Sunseekers to inflatable dingys and bikini-clad co-pilots on a beautiful Ozark Day. Even if you don't bring a boat, the scene at Capt. Ron's is entertaining enough and you can buy a ticket to a cruise ship anchored at the finish line with food/drink they will shuttle you out to. Time to stop typing and go check out today's runs...love the smell of racing fuel in the morning.
 
2011 SHOOTOUT TOP GUN: "My Way" 48' Mystic (I've also heard 50') with twin turbines ran 208 mph...3 times...after having a couple runs where the radar didn't pick up the boat...the boat has a radar reflector

We're gonna need a better radar...

That radar stuff is crock of crap for such a big event. They should use the set up drag boats use
 
I tried to get down there for this but I couldn't make it. My aunt has a house right next to party cove in the Grand Glaize arm and my inlaws are looking at buying a place down there. I guess there's always next year. I wish they would still do the OSS there.

BR I think I am going to have to disagree with you on this one. I think that it is amazing what turbines can do. Those things are spinning at 50000-60000 RPMs and people put them in enviroments that these engines were never designed for. My company has some filters on Miss Geico's 50' Mystic and I have been looking at their onboard data. It's pretty impressive! Airplanes and helicopters used to be piston engines, but I think turbines have made their place there too. Just my opinion.

I do agree that a big HP piston engine is pretty cool too. There's nothing cooler than sitting at the marina or in a cove and all of sudden you hear twin or triple big blocks fire up!
 
Sorry, guys. Haven't been on the site much lately.

BR is right. I ran for the 3rd year in a row and I've always been the only boat in my class. Ran 73mph every single year. If there's a consistency award, I think I've earned it. :thumb:
Would be nice to throw down some numbers with another boat, but that's the way it goes. It's a fun event to be a part of.

Another Checkmate showed up this year. A ZT 280 called "CheckMark". The owner's name was Mark, but the boat was actually named by the previous owner. lol Nice guy. The current Mark, that is.

I know some folks don't dig turbines, but watching My Way make pass after pass after pass at those speeds was simply impressive, especially when you see all the prep and follow-up that Dave Scott requires with his alcohol engines (no disrespect intended). When the challenge for all of us is to be fast and reliable, you just gotta respect My Way's set-up.

I will likely run again next year if I still have the Checkmate. :cheers:
