Atlanta area / Lake Lanier ; new to me '89 starflite

I LOVE my new to me boat! Bought it in TN from a man that was going on his 3rd child and "had to" get it gone! Bought it right, reasonable trailer, and having a ball in in this summer on Lake Lanier. The lake is down a bit at the dock, and I am threatening to take it out so I can start playing with it!

early 90's 150 Merc xr (?), generic 19 ss prop, interior is begging to be re-done, stereo that needs some serious speakers, 5" CMC hydro-jackplate, white base with red and blue paint/upholstery.

This is going to be fun!

Pics coming soon! This is a GREAT site! These boats are hot-rods, and set up right, they can down right embarass those Donzi pansies, and others. I was over at Sunset Cove a few nights ago, and I was talking to this guy bith a bad a$$ Liberator with twins. He said there were not a lot of Checkamtes around Lake Lanier, so I look forward to a repower with a bit more juice and a top end prop. I just upped for Supporting Memebr Badge, so I am sure I will be mnaking some new friends!

Anyone from ALTANTA? If we rafted all the Lanier 'mates together, I wonder how big we'd be?

Hey man, welcome!

I have the exact same boat - different color scheme and powerplant - bored out 350 (to 355). I posted some pictures in my "new member" thread - take a look at let me know if it's the same boat.

I'm in Traverse, go out all the time in West Bay mostly, but I've been over to Torch a couple of times as well.

Hope to see you out on the water!

Brian

Well I guess that means I dont have the only 'flite on Lanier anymore! Welcome! We have rare boats that are never seen on the chaos we call Lake Lanier. I grew up on Lanier at Lan Mar Marina... now Port Royale. I acutally fell in love with Checkmates in 1984 when the guy on the dock next to me bought a brand new Enchanter. We saw 72 mph on the speedo (no GPS's then) and I was instantly hooked. Especially when I drove it and waxed his other boat. A 34' twin screw Scarab.

I spend some time at both Lanier and Allatoona now since I live in Woodstock. Although I usually stay away from the south end of Lanier. Too many big boats these days.

You will enjoy the Starflite on that lake. It is capable of handling some of the bigger water. My little old MX-15 was a death trap down on that end before I sold it.

I will keep an eye out for you. If you see a red and white Starflite that will be me!

Enjoy the site. These guys on here are awesome and have helped me more than I could ever describe.

- Mike

Whoops, I thought you meant Atlanta, Michigan :rof:

I think there are 3 or 4 in the Ga area......

There are more than you might imagine. The GA dnr website has a place where you can search or download boat registration data, a while back I went on a Checkmate scavenger hunt in the database and was surprised how many I found (somewhere around 50 in the state as I recall).

I go to Allatoona, which isn't really a great lake for running fast on. You get up to speed then have to back down after a minute or two. Plus there are more and more huge cruisers (and the assholes driving them invariably drive right at plowing speed so they're makiing the worst wake possible). Also, the Corps of Engineers drops Allatoona something like 15 feet in the winter, and it's already well on the way down.

Anyway, get some photos up so we can all see what ya' got.

:welcome: Congrats on your purchase.

If you are going to re-power I'd suggest trying to pick up a 3.0 Merc for your Starflite. I had a 2.4 200 and a 2.5 245 on mine before the 3.0 and would never even think about putting either one back on unless I was selling the boat and wanted to keep the motor. Our boats are on the heavy side and the torque of the 3.0 is amazing compared to the 2.4 or 2.5.

Thanks all....the Starflite I picked up (from a guy up near Pigeon Forge TN) needed a lil help. It had a 200 Johnson on it. Now really, there can only be ONE big johnson in my boat, so I trade it out for 150 Merc that runs...the johnson was in need of some help.

So now that the lake is down, and my dock is just about in the mud, the boat is on the trailer, in the car port, getting a new floor, wet foam ripped out, new stereo set up, some blue LED rope lites under the gunwales and bow, a couple of blue led lights under the swim steps, all the top side screws backed up, and spider cracks re-inforced underneath with another coat of glass, a new transom and HD braces, an additional 6-8" of setback on the 5.5 CMC hydro-jack plate.....and finally I want to put a new Pulse seat set into it...I love the new smoother lines of the Capt chairs and the back wrapping around the back seat....so we will see what kind of fabrication we can come up with to make this work...

then... NEXT year..... a paint job and BIGGER MERC.... right now, it is looking like a 300xs....

and THEN..... I am gonna have to learn how to drive this thing, cuz from what I am reading, once over 60-65 it's gonna get squirly......
