Baja Killer.....

Well-known member
Yesterday, I met a co-worker at Lake Norman, NC for a quick lunch and a boat ride. It was a great day at the lake- mid 70s, sunny and just enough wind for 1-2' chop. We had the marina put the boat in and we idled out the channel towards the main finger of Lake Norman. We were headed towards a popular restaurant/bar on the North side of the lake.

As we idled out of the NO WAKE zone, a newer Baja Oulaw I/O coming off of the gas dock pulled in behind us coming up the channel. It was a 25-26' range boat w/ the splatter type paint scheme you see on a lot of Bajas. (It was actually a nice looking boat- white w/ red and black "splatter". Can I say that on the Mate site?) The "captain" was a mid 20s type rich kid that you often see on the lake (lots of money around Moorsville and Charlotte).

Anyways, we pass the end of the NO WAKE zone and i was still at idle. My Merc 300x has the OS style exhaust, so i usually try to be a 'good neigbor' and idle out a ways before unleasing 335 hp of screaming OB. But as you can already guess, "Captian Baja" hits the buoy and nails it on plane. He comes about 30 ft behind us at an angle off my stern and then goes screaming past us. He throws a pretty big wake with several other smaller boats off plane. As he passed, I could hear the whine of a blower motor....I'm guessing a 502 Merc w/ a Whipple, he is looking over like he wants to run us.......

My buddy that was along for the ride had never been over 45 mph in a boat in his life and it was pretty choppy w/ boat wake. So I just let the guy go on towards the main lake. We finally get on plane and our cruising along around 55-60. Mean while, "Captian Baja" has turned around and his headed right back at us at a high rate of speed! He passes off our left side, loops around behind us and starts to slow down a little. He then comes along side again and just nails it. The whole time he has this s--t eating grin on his face. I just wave and keep cruising on towrds the restaurant.

So after having a nice lunch and ONE tall beverage made famous by a St. Louis company. (I don't condone drinking and boating..at least to much) My friend's wife picks him up on their waverunner and i leave on the Mate.

I'm cruising along around 65-70 mph back up the main lake......and guess who I meet again? That's right, my favorite crime fighter-"Captain Baja"! This time he passes by me wide open (I'm guessing around 80), cuts across my bow and loops around behind me, again.
I let him pass by......then I nail the throttle and started trimming hard. That part of the lake was perfect for my boat....1-2' chop w/ no boat wake! Since i was running a 4 blade Trophy ("fishin prop") the boat accelerated from the 60s to low 80s in seconds! I passed by the Baja like he was sitting still. I kept on going to around 90 and then i backed off. Meanwhile, the big IO finally got a full head of steam going and passes me by at full throttle. I let him pass by 3-4 boat lenghts and I nail it again. (I didn't want to hear the guy complain that I just out accellerated him!) I quickly catch up, pull even, and just nail it again.........I wanted to make sure he knew he was beat soundly twice!
I finally look back and he has turned around headed in the other direction.

I'm thinking of getting a small sticker made for my dash- "Baja Killer!"

PS- Later on a 28' Skater w/ twin 250s passed me like i was standing still. I guess there will always be someone faster. At least they were nice guys though.

Great story, your Pulsare IS a killer. Did you remove the 300x graphics like you talked about? Outlaw's are nice looking boats but don't compare to Pulsare!

Way to go!!!

slap em silly with the throttle! Baja boy is probably spending another 20 grand... to go faster.. so you can slap em silly again..

SOUNDS LIKE A FUN DAY ON THE WATER. IT'S ALWAYS A BLAST TO OUT RUN SOMEBODY ELSE NO MATTER HOW FAST (OR SLOW) YOUR BOAT IS.

KIND OF MAKES YOU GRIN.

Love IT!!!!

This thread was brought up on the Roberts Marine thread, so I went and found it.

I love that story... I read it with one huge chit eat'n grin.

My buddy has a 25 outlaw, and we went out the first weekend that I had the 300XS. The boat's handling changed so much (from my 2.5) that I couldn't get her above the high 60's to just about 70 without letting off (I just wasn't comfortable). His boat does 75 so I was forced to watch him walk on me:brickwall:........ Fast forward to 1-1/2 months later, I am running in the low 80's with plentty of room for improvement and I can't seem to track him down to come out and play (He has a new baby). I absolutely can't wait to get him back out on the water!!!!!!!!

My biggest fear is that when I blow by him the Vinyl Sticker Graphics might come off!!!!!!!! LOL J/K. I actually don't mind Baja's as most of the time the boats are nice, but the person that is driving makes it ugly. His is a little older and has more of the graphics in the gel than the new ones, so I like it even better.

SCT, was the 300X stock @ 335 HP. I wonder how that compares to my 300XS.

I really doubt that my motor is that strong. But it definately pulls.

What were you running for set-up on that rig, if you don't mind me asking?

I know the thread is 3+ YRS old,But I have to agree THE AMOUNT OF NEW MONEY AROUND CHARLOTTE IS INSANE. Its now the 2nd largest banking center in the nation after New York City.
The brother-in-law has been there 15 yrs and makes 7 figures as ceo/vice pres of some money managment company.Try keeping up with those jones's.
But anyway back to the thread,One day I would like to trailer my boat down for a vist and spend a few days on Lake Norman.(It would have to be a new checkmate. The wife would just die if I dragged the ole' starflite down.):rof:

Old thread but GREAT story! Reminds me of when I dropped an 80hp on my 12' avon soft keel for a few hours. I passed 3 rangers and 2 glastrons in the glades that morning who were obviously @ WOT. I have NO idea how fast I was going but I was afraid I would break my wrist. I was younger/dumber so it is no way i'll be doing that again just to check #s, lol. :surf:
