Best prop for eluder

Hello, I have a 1984 checkmate eluder bowrider with a 235 evinrude crossflow. It has 10 hours since rebuilt, all pistons resleeved w/ stock bores, xp heads with stock gaskets, boyesen reeds, and velocity stacks. The lower unit has a nose cone. It also has an hydraulic jackplate I have a 24 pitch turbo, a 26 raker, and a 27 srx (or stx, etc. i forgot lol). I have only ran the 26 raker since the engine rebuild, and upgrades. With a half tank of fuel, two people, and about 80 -100lbs. of misc. gear, the boat will run mid-upper 60s, and only turns about 5k rpms. The stock original 235 turned the 24 turbo to 61-6200 rpms and consistently upper 60s, so I thought the 27 would be a good prop, but the 26 seems too much. Could it be that the engine needs more break in time? Is this a bad prop for this boat? The past owner claimed the boat would run 70-72 with the old 235 with a 26 raker. I bought the raker used, could I have been told it was a raker when it was not? Also, I used to run the boat with the bowrider canvas on and without the center part of the windshield, and now are running it without the canvas and glass, could this make much a difference? I also noticed that the boat dumps a lot of water when I turn the bilge pump on (like8-10 gallons), is this normal for this boat? Thanks in advance for all your respones. I understand this is a very long post, but am just trying to give as much information as possible. I am new to this site, and this place is great:D

First thing i would do is get a water pressure guage if ya dont have one i would let it go below 10-12 psi then figure out how far below the pad or V you are. Seems like you have one or two things wrong there either your motor is burried to deep or you have to much prop.I would honesty think about a trophy plus Your rpms seem very low. I run a 25 trophy plus at 74.3 on a starflite with a 225 yamaha. Until this summer i would of said there was no way a four blade would out run a 3 blade, but do to its smaller diamete over the tempests and etc. The trophy is an unbelievable prop once its set up ive yet to have it let loose and it has posted the best top speed numbers as well as the cruising speed is almost 9mph faster at 4000rpms. Cant explain that but thats the way it is. I cant stress the water psi gauge enuff. Once ya know you have water then your safe to start searching for speed its about a 30min job and they are very inexpensive. Good luck Aaron

Thanks, I have a water pres gauge. It shows around 8-9 with the jackplate up all the way, and neutral trim, at anything over 4k. I do not pay attention to the gauge very much though at other times, cause I have a mirror set up to see if the engine is dumpin water which was my only concern when installin the gauge. I will check where the prop is at, w/ plate up, and trimmed out to see if the prop is too deep. Thanks again

The jackplate is about 5.5in deep. The mid on the o/b is a 20in. The top of the l/u bullet it just below the bottom of the pad w/ the plate all the way up and neutral trim. Will the most efficient setting be with the rear end of the propshaft at 1.5in below the pad? Thanks for all the help!

I think your probabaly as high as you want to go as long as your maintaing water pressure I dont think id go any higher 8-9 psi is borderline if anything maybe a littlte low.Is the water pump new or has it been run dry at all, even a split second can take it out so it doesnt pump enuff, its always a good idea to replace if you dont know for sure. So that leads me to believe you have to much prop, do you have any others you can try that are around a 25p.
PICS can do wonders in here its alot easier to the simple things you may be missing or have going on. Try to get a few pics of the boat includeing several of the motor setup. IM sure later this evening more guys will chime that may have more knowledge on that motor, you definately found the right website to be at. Aaron

I have not replaced the water pump, so it very likely could have been run dry before. I have heard of fillling the top hole on each side of the side pickups to improve water pressure, but am not very familiar if it would help this set-up. I tried the 24 today, but was not able to run it up because of a little too much wind for my liking:D . I am also concerned why the engine is pulling 1200 rpms less with just 2 more pitch and a just rebuilt motor with higher compression, reeds, and removed airbox. Should I be concerned or does the engine needs more time to get broken in? Thanks, this site has so much info;)

2 pitch ruffly will drop 800rpms also take into consideration the diameters. How many hours you have on the motor now I wouldnt be running hard until its broken in. What type of 24 did you try? Aaron

about 12 hours on the engine. the 24 pitch is a turbo. Man i didn't think it was 800 rpms! So i guess if it ran 61-6200 with a 24, then a 26 would get 53-5400, but i was expecting to gain maybe 400 or so rpms with the mods and the motor being fresh. ill check the diameters

A couple things you will need to take in consideration here. Is the he said- she said thing(cant always go by what the previous owner first said) Almost everyone in here uses a gps to tune there setups it has been a huge help in dialing mine in. I dont think your rpms will change alot with the compression, maybe more pop off the bottom . Did you rejet for the airbox removal? The 1/4 inch in prop diameter isnt going to effect ya that much. Ive found that on my starflite my boat likes the smaller diameter prop like the 13 3/4 trophy or 13 3/4 laser II/ quiksilver lightspeed. Its seems alot of times guys tend to overlook the tried and true standbys like the laserII or trophy, if they werent great props they wouldnt been around so long thats for sure. I Think ya may have better luck with one of those in the 25p range. Id be shooting for around the 6000 range. I hope this helps ya some. If ya were close id have ya try mine. Alot of prop shops will allow you to run the demos. The props your running tdo the have vent holes, are they small hub or large hub? Aaron

The speeds from before the rebuild and after I did myself with a handheld gps, but yes the 72 with 26 raker the past owner claimed was probably optimistic. I did not install the velocity stacks myself, because I had to have the engine rebuilt and sent the reeds, heads, and stacks off with the engine because they said they would install them at no cost. The turbo has vent holes and a "flare" at the end of the prop. The raker has neither. how does the 4th blade affect the rps vs. a 3 blade of same pitch? Will the props you mentioned fit on an erude without modification? I will try one of those props as soon as I can get my hands on one! Thanks man, youve helped me with a whole lot of stuff today:D

I believe you will be able to stay neer the same pitch being that you will be going from a larger diameter to a smaller one. I think you should be ruffly a 24 or 25 trophy plus as well as the laser II. they weill fit im sure with the right hub kit. Hopefully BOATMAN will see this he has a wealth of knowledge and is an great guy to work with.He also sells props and may have one hes willing to let ya try. You can look at all the different attempts at props ive tried this summer in this prop section. May help to read what others have all tried as well its certainly cheaper I guarentee that. Aaron
