Boat Electronics

They ran that far aground by going too fast in the dark. ;)

:poke:but flying across the lake under the light of the moon can be so nice.

The story was that one boat saw the light of the campers and thought it was a stern light and went that direction. The other was trying to follow a course he plotted earlier.

Plotting a course via "full pool" charts big mistake when lake is down 70 feet for dam repair.

That's why I wait until the water is down for the winter to plot my course. I can see stump fields, underwater humps, rocks etc. That helps me stay clear of any danger at full pool.

Thats exactly how you do it !!! Plus, every chart shows the channel and in the case of LC even at winter pool which was where they kept it for 8 years, the depth in the channel is 80' or better at the dam it was still 150' during repairs.

Thanks for all the input. I don't have any experience with these so I just picked a few.

When your out there getting busy at 60+ mph do these things keep up? Do they give you a warning that your projected to go into shallow water? I read most of the descriptions but didn't see anything like this.

My Lowrance has alarm settings that will go off if you get off course or for shadow water. Mine will keep up running WOT, but like anything else it's only as good as the person inputting the data(waypoints). Also remember your transducer is mounted on the transom or inside in the bilge area. so you'll to keep that in mind when running. Normally when I plot a trail it's during the winter draw down. I obviously avoid shallow areas, stump fields, underwater humps etc when doing so.

On the chart there are levels of detail you can select such as depth graduations and different shoreline features. I will post a pic of a screenshot so you can see.
And for keeping up goes your boats progression on the screen is pretty much real time at that speed. Any of these units today is looking at no less than 15 birds at any one time no different than the units for your car as far as that goes. Most of the navionics charts have nautical markers depending on the waterway, a lot of the costal waterway chart cards have quite a bit of tidal info as well.

Check these out from ray, I went with the a67 and it is pretty impressive and user friendly. Way easier to operate than a ohio class sub !!!

Thanks for digging this thread back up, I'm in the market myself. I found what appears to be good deals on Amazon, I'm just not sure what I'm looking at. I'd like to spend between 200.00-400.00. Cheaper the better as my tank in the boat is almost empty.

My thoughts on this item:
Price is good
I like that there is a wifi connection that works with iPhone
I think I'll need to buy a different sd card for lakes and rivers ($120)
Comes with a transducer

I looked at that unit this summer and almost bought it. Unfortunately, I needed some other items first (reliable engine:irked:). I put it on my Christmas list for my wife (I mean Santa) to bring me. Which transducer did you go with? Let me know how things go.
