Bottom paint removal.

New member
I have a 25 that i had bottom painted. what a mistake. how do you remove without damage to gel. Idid not sand or primer when i painted .Its been on for 5 years. A lot of it is wearing off. I dont want to sand off and have to buff the bottom. Any advice would be appreciated.

I would recommend hull acid and high pressure water. I have used a pressure washer at 2500 psi and was able to remove it. That is the best advice I can give you. Try a small spot first to make sure that it will not damage it.

West Marine sells a product called Peel Away paint stripper for bottom paint. I used it ,then pressure washed, then polished with Aqua polishes took a few days but looks like new..........Never again will I buy a boat with bottom paint

ther is a new type of sandblasting using grounded up cashews or nuts etc. i almost bought a boat with bottom plate, states will not ruin gel + remove it safety. I think its been around for a few years. Call around the big boat yards or sandblasters. call few get some ideas I think its 300 to 400 dollars . good luck

That form of blasting has been around quite a while if you go that route make sure whoever you have do really knows what he's doing cuz it can still screw up your gel coat if you use to much pressure.
