Can you help a new guy? 1995 Checkmate Pulsare 2100 w. 1995 Mercury 200 XRi & Trailer

Can you help a new guy? 1995 Checkmate Pulsare 2100 w. 1995 Mercury 200 XRi & Trailer

I'm living in Ontario Canada and want to buy a Checkmate.

I don't know alot about Checkmates but I have always wanted one and have the means to buy one now.

I am wondering if there is someone who could give me information on this boat that I am considering purchasing.

Here is what it is:

1995 Checkmate Pulsare 2100 w. 1995 Mercury 200 XRi & Trailer

Is this a good boat and engine in terms of any known flaws for the particular year of production etc.

Is there anything specific I should watch out for?

I am going to have a mechanic check it out before I buy it but any info would really help.

Thanks

The Pulsare 2100 is one of Checkmates most successful outboard powered models. A 200Xri should push the boat into the mid 60's if setup correctly with the right setback and prop. It is a very versatile boat and can handle chop well. Always check the floor for softspots (under the seat pedestals and under the rear bench), check the transom for stress cracks. The 200Xri is a fuel injected motor. They idle and run very well but are a bit on the thirsty side for fuel consumption. I have a 1994 Pulsare 2100 long deck with a 1995 Merc 225XRi for sale in the Checkmate listings. It is a well know boat on this site with many improvements and has been gps'd at 77.0 MPH. You will enjoy the Pulsare!!!

Hi Jupiter,

You seem to have a good understanding of these boats.

Can you let me know how it is for skiing behind and also for wakeboarding behind?

My kids do both.

As well, my lake is not huge. Does it plane fairly fast?

Thanks

Hi Pulsare,

You seem to be very knowlegeable and I thank you for it.

How are these boats for wakeboarding and skiing behind? My kids do both.

As well, my lake is not huge. Does it plane fairly fast?

is this boat a bowrider or closed deck? i got to run a 2100 closed bow last summer - fun boat - very well behaved, seemed to plane fairly quickly. i think you'll enjoy it a lot. you my find the bowrider more suitable for a family just because of the extra room. what lake will you boating on? water skiing will be good, wakeboarding will be so-so, it doesn't make a huge wake which makes it harder to catch good air for tricks.

We've done alot of kneeboarding, wakeboarding, tubing behind my boat. A bowrider will plane off faster than the closed bow if you have people in the bow. A quicksilver HiFive prop is great for skiing!

:welcome: to the board !!
Jupiter's Pulsare would be a great rig to get..
Evryone on this site knows the history on it..Extremely well maintained and also BOTM a few times..
If i was to buy used, this one would be my 1rst choice..The trip would be well worth it..
So hurry before the snow gets here..

I have a starliner (predecessor to the pulsare br). There are some significant hull design differences, but similar weight freeboard, etc.. I'd guess they perform very similarly for watersports.

I wakeboard a good bit and pull the kids on their little skis and tubes. I use 3 350 lb fatsaks and use a reinforced ski pole that is about 6' above the floor - not as good as a tower but alot cheaper! I am running a 19P prop. The boat throws a nice wake with the bags and a few chubby buddies - close to 2' and with the higher pole and a spectra rope I can get 5+ ft of air as a solid intermediate wakeboarder. So it works pretty well as a wakeboard boat that will push 70 with a prop change. Only real downside is that it is hard to hold certian speeds - especially compared to my friend's mastercraft. With a 19 p prop, it planes 'uh.... fast. Not inboard ski boat fast, but fast enough for any slalomer. Planes nicely with the sac's in too. Still runs close to 60 with that prop on it.

So to be totally honest, if you're buying it mainly for watersports or wakeboarding there are better boats just for that - an I/O ski boat with a wedge or ballast and a tower. If you like the idea of having a hand made, classic fairly lightweight boat that will look great, seat a bunch of people, outrun 90% of the boats on the water and still be good for watersports then you've found your boat. That pulsare will also get you into some very shallow water and trailer nicely behind a mid-size SUV (roughly 3000 lbs with a single axle trailer) if you care about that stuff.

Good luck and welcome to the board! This is a good bunch of guys and you'll find alot of helpful people on here.

Hey CW
You will not be disappointed with the Pulsare. It is a great boat and very versatile. The 200 will be enough power for water sports. I am on Lake of the Woods Ontario and we ski and wakeboard behind a 1992 200 XRI no problem.
Few things to consider:
1) With the value of the Canadian dollar it is a great time to look for one in the US. They sell for 1000's less used. You will have to pay gst and pst bringing across the line though. Lots of freshwater boats available in the states just south of you.
2) With the 200 it will be a mid 60's boat as mentioned. If you get the speed bug you may want more as the boat has a lot more potential. If that is going to happen you are better off getting a bigger motor now as repowering is expensive. The hull is really at home with a 225 although it can accomodate a 250 or 300. (Personally I am not a fan of Merc EFI's as I don't think the electronics are reliable, but then I am a Yamaha man)
3) As mentioned the bowrider is a better fit for family boating.

Checkmate Wannabe I'm pretty sure we are discussing my boat here. I can answer any concerns, for instance: floor rot is impossible my boat is always in my garage out of the sun and always dry, Merc EFI electronics...8 years of trouble free ownership, gel coat is superb again because it never sits in the sun and also because I treated my boat to a $575 professional detailing just because, interior is clean and will last another 15 years...I don't let people step into the boat by using my back seat and the seats are not even close to falling apart, the motor has been fogged annually, foot oil annually, foot oil also checked periodically throughout the summer, fuel stabilizer every fall, water/fuel filter every year, two sets of spark plugs...one to winterize and burn of first tank of gas and another for the summer months, my canvas is still in awesome shape...the black has little fading, all the snaps are in tact and the stitching is still strong, all my gauges work, all the trailer lights work, the trailer has new tires and rims (last summer).

As far as waterskiing is concerned, the holeshot is fantastic and the boat holds it speed very well. Tubing with three guys and keeping the boat on plane is not a problem. Speed...sure a 225 or bigger would be nice but if your like me you will rarely go over 50 mph and honestly 65 or 70 mph is plenty fast at WOT.

I AM ANAL ABOUT EVERYTHING I OWN AND NEVER CUT CORNERS OR OVERLOOK MAINTENANCE!

Let's get that dealer inspection done and go burn of the last 25 or 30 gallons of gas left in it from the summer...:bounce:no family...:sssh:...you will not be disappointed. Bring your touque!

Wow..I never knew there was anybody else as anal as me about taking care of a boat!!:bigthumb::devil: We could be twins!! lol

It's not just my boat it's everything!! Some people refer to me as the obsessive one!:o Heck, I'm still driving a 1994 Toyota pickup with over 300K that has NO rust...that's a feat on it's own.

Thank you everone for the positive feedback...

 Welcome.
I bought my Pulsare 2100br on advice that I got from members on this
site and they were all right on with there advice. I couldn't be happier with it. Mine is also a 95 but I have a carburated 200 merc. we do alot of tubing and I think it planes out pretty quick with 4 kids behind it, (around
400lbs)and just a 25p laser II prop.
As said somewhere in this site It may not be the fastest boat on the water but it sure is the best looking.
