Champion or NGK for 89 Evinrude 225?

M.Spectra201

New member
I have an 89 Evinrude 225 with a rebuilt powerhead. The old OMC factory people say to stick with the Champion plugs recommended by the manufacturer QL77JC4 which I have been using or QL16V for sustained high speed. I am hearing that NGK makes a better plug. The only one they list for my engine is BZ7HS-10 stock#3579.

Anyone have any insight?
Thanks

OMC has always recommended champion plugs, for some reason they appear to work better. on the other hand, merc always suggests NGK. I've used both and never had a problem.

So it sounds like some have done ok with Champion and others haven't. Mr.Buss have you had OMC outboards that you had problems with the plugs?

never hac an omc, but i tell tell you they dont work worth a hoot in weedwackers, chainsaws, snowmobiles, jet skis, dirt bikes, or even Force outboards built by US marine/chyrsler. like i said earlier its just my opinon, but honestly i dont ever remember not fouling a champion plug in a 2 stroke.

I am with Buss on this one.......I have never had any luck with Champion plugs in anything 2-stroke......I have switched everything to NGK's.......there is a reason that Mercs are faster than OMC's :poke: It's the plugs!

Im the same as Buss man. i hate champions total junk, every mechanic i kinow says total junk hate em. thats my .02

My 90 model looper behaves with ngk br8hs. A good plug to read if you have done any mods. No porcelain color check in them surface gaps.

Here is what you need to do!!!!
use neither champion or NGK
and instead use a cross reference chart to find a Bosch Platinum or denso iridium plug that matches your current plug #.
Their are many different plugs that will work in your engine but wont
be found in the typical autozone reference book because the manufacturer only tests a couple different plugs and because they don't test other manufacturers they wont list them as a direct match. But what some clever people have done is decode the entire number of your plug. Thread, thread depth, heat range, insulation projection, everything.... well they take that information and find plugs that match up exactly to what you have. sooo
with that said I like the iridium or platinum plugs much beter because the core material has a lot lower resistance than copper so they never arc to the body of the plug (fouling) plus they have a much much much longer life. I ran iridiums all last year and they still look and function like new.
I have had the Bosch Platinum's in a two stroke motorcycle for the past 4 years of competition and am about to change it out of guilt.

champion QL77JC4
denso iridium equivalent - IWF27

it will be an exact match and my recommendation. I will put a $100 down that says you'll absolutely love them and wonder why you'd ever use conventional plugs again.

Combat, thanks for your info, I'll try and see if I can find those plugs but at what price.
So does this mean that if I can score some iridium plugs that the Mercs are in for a "Rude" awakening????

I too say NGK, i have ran them in everything, i just swapped them out from my sportster for the champion made "HD" plugs and it runs better now. I am sure there are better plugs for the money but when it comes to NGK vs Champion, i think champions are cheap plugs and don't last as long nor run as smooth.

The Denso iridiums are more than the Bosch Platinums and both are equally amazing.
the iridiums might be hard to find at an auto store just google the plug number and you should find em no problem

the iridium's run about $10 a pop
the bosch platinum's are about $6-8
and are easier to come by at your local auto store
but i didnt see any that matched your number.

Nope....I will have to say that while I run NGK in my Merc(s) , Yamaha(s), all my snowmobiles and frankly everything that I can think of don't bother wasting your dough on that exotic cross-referenced plug.

I drag raced a V-6 Gordon Montague " Monty" motor which was based on exactly the same block you have. I also ran it and a 200 hp looper on a Hydrostream. For some strange reason they ONLY ran on those Champions. All of the OMC's did. Don't even bother w/the "q" ( that's just the suppression version ) just run the L77CJ4. It will run just fine.

There is a reason the engineers recommended that plug.....It runs the best on it. And it won't break the bank when you buy a set.

If you are running your VRO,
Stick with the QL77JC4

X2, I always run the champions and never had a problem! But then again I replace my plugs every year before the boating season gets started. Never used the exotic plugs, since I replace my plugs every year it would be a waste of money unless they magically give me a couple hundred rpm.

I agree, I have an 89 special Edition 225 and always run the Ql77JC4's , fresh set each season. Never had a problem. I updated my VRO to the newer 4 wire OMS pump. I run NGK's in all of my sleds aswell.
