Lots of BS, not much common sense
It would seem crazy that an old engine could not benifit from the switch to better oil. It may be less cost effective, as some of the wear that oils protect from has already happened so you might be wasting your money a bit. But if the logic were true that you should not switch and old motor to synthetic, then it would also be true that once a motor is older it should be switched out of synthetic back to regular oil, sounds crazy doesn't it.
I'm a fan of better oils and frequent oil changes. I don't like the long change time periods as oils can get acidic over time, so I used top brand non-synthetic oils changed often to get the byproducts of combustion out of the oil in the engine, unless it's a racing application or warranty requirement then it's synthetic all the way. I consider the boating that I do non-racing as my boat is usually not working that hard, but some of you guys pleasure boat at full throttle lots so that would be racing to me.
If I had an endless supply of money I would always use synthetic, since I don't I only use it when it make sense.
