Checkmate Regatta/Poker Run In Ohio

"The remnants of Dennis are expected to stall near the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys; some spots in the lower Midwest could see in excess of 10 or 12 inches of rain over the next several days."

They say it may loop around and stall right over the Ohio Valley.

If I lived within a couple of hours that would work, but with the cost of the Regatta, hotel, and the posibility of being cooped up in a hotel room with my wife and bored 2 year old things won't work for us. I may have to eat my registration fees and stay home if things at the weather.com site don't look better by tomorrow (my last day to cancel the hotel room without a charge)

I wonder if I'll be able to recoop any funds from the Regatta if I have to cancel. This really SUCKS!!!

We are hoping for the best as well. How does the schedule change if we get lots of rain? We may still make the trip so we can meet some of the Checkmate gang anyway

Glad to hear that there are 30+ boats that will be at the regatta. Any idea on what the average size boat will be?

Just check national weather service , Cleveland,Ohio. Weather forecast calls for south winds 10 to 15 knots becoming southwest, a chance of showers and thunderstorms, waves 1 to 3 feet. The event is on rain or shine. We will make the best of it as there is a nice ballroom if needed. The weather has been great every weekend so far.We have made several runs to the islands.Kunkel's came up saturday with their boat to see the facility and run the course set up for the poker run . Last minute details are being completed so we all can have a great time.

Jon

I’ll be attending as a landlubber rain or shine. My Predictor’s outboard motor has experienced last minute technical difficulties (intermittent ignition switch in the controller).

Herb,
Just checked the Weather Channel, the website says there is a 30% chance of rain Saturday, so things look pretty good at this point.
Make sure you come regardless and I will buy you a beer (if you drink).
Although we are leaving our three year old at home I am sure our wives will love to swap war stories on child rearing. Even if we don't make it on the water I am sure everyone will have a great time.
Steve

If anyone is looking to back-out of the race, I would be willing to buy your "seat"

I missed the entry date deadline and want to run it. But I would have to miss Dinner and head to Cleveland later in the day.

Just asking, I really want to enter.

If you want to attend the poker run/regatta this weekend, call Kunkel's Marine at 419-529-4446 and give them the information from your registration sheet. You will be required to pay your entry fee then at the time of registration the day of the event. We can only take approximately four more boats so if you want to attend, please call as soon as possible.

sMac,

Looks like you are in if you call ASAP

The wife and I decided to come anyway based on the 30% chance of rain. This could be the end of my long distance boating trips so I hope the rain activities are going to eep me in the good graces with the wife.

We'll see you all Friday night if you are at Cabana Jacks, otherwise see you all Sat morning

EXCELLENT, I am calling Kunkels today to get my seat.

See everyone there. The best day for the weather so far is this Sat and Sun. 30% chance of rain isn't too bad.

We are leaving today, and plan to stay at the knights inn Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights.
Have had some major boat struggles, should make for good stories for 10 years from now!!!!!

Dont worry, we always travel with tools.

Chris

I plan on it, I should be able to post them monday using one of my hosting sites.

We will be staying at the Best Western for the weekend and will be at Cabana's fri evening for sure.

I spoke with Jon from Kunkels this morning and got my seat. I asked the route and he told me where we're heading.

The race is going to run right past my dock! So, I'll try to have some family member hang out on the dock in the morning to take some shots of the race. Should be a neat sight to have 30 Mates cruise by the house. I'll post them on my server next week.

Weather is looking decent too. mild South winds at 9 and slight chance of rain. (too early to trust though)

I've never done any boating in this bay before, or Ohio for that matter. What's the story on alcoholic beverages? Is BYOB allowed at Lyman Harbor? Is there a place to buy alcohol local to the event or should I plan on bringing it along with me from PA?

aahhh, a man with his priorities right! My kind of thinking.

You are allowed to have 'booze on-board" and as long as the Captain isn't legally intoxicated, you are okay. That's the answer I was given from the ODNR during the winter Boat Show. Our legal limit is .10

There's plenty of places to purchase alcohol, but it might be a little easier to BYOB. And I don't know how Lyman is, but I would bet that you can BYOB there also. It would make the post-race more fun.

Hope that helps.
