Checkmate water hoses

I'm getting close to putting my engine back in. My question is, the water hoses on it are 1/2" I.D. , and I'm having a heck of a time getting the hoses to fit over the fittings. Can I change the hoses to 3/4" I.D. and will this hurt the water flow or help? Big Red, I know you use to have one identical to mine what do you think?
