Checkmates on the Chesapeake Bay?

Good morning, everyone! Ravens are out of town on the 18th so Joe and I will definitely be out on the water that day. Let's meet up. Dobbins is out (you saw the story in the Gazette?) but maybe Fairlee Creek? Depending on weather and what Joe's thinking, we'd be happy to hang at Rock Creek again, too. I'd love to go to Cambridge for races, but we're headed to Dover that day for the race. I really like the idea of heading down to Solomon's area, but that's more of a weekend trip for us and with Joe working til 5pm on Saturday's that's a tough one. Chinaride is right, lower bay can get ugly so weather would play a big factor in that ride, too. JK

Chinaride,

I ran to within 2-miles of Point Lookout yesterday. Real calm and only took about 15 min. You still heading down this weekend? We'll be on the beach at the mouth of the Little Wicomico most of the weekend. Lot's of friends and neighbors hanging out. Great place to swim and drink a cold one!! Send me an e-mail and I'll give you my number at the cottage. (Carneal@raynoradams.com)

that is still the plan. If it is calm enough you can count on me being there. sounds like a good time. looking forward to it. If you have some good navagation skills or gps, rented a slip right in front of the tiki bar in solomon's island, i'll be there at night time. anybody can come!!!!!!!!!kyle

Hey Kyle, Did you ever make it to Solomon's? The rest of the weekend it blew out of the NE. A no go for us, we'd been headed right into it. Oh well, beautiful weather otherwise. Just a little bumpy.

made it to solomon' for the air show, it was great they flew about 150 feet right over us! The kids loved it. But when we headed out to the bay over to your place it was way to rough for them, the little one got a little sea sick, so we decided to run back up the river and hang out. Thanxs for invite though, we'll try it again some other time. kyle

Kyle, Anytime.....I have a ramp at the house if you ever want to put in there and explore. Just need 4wd... Woody

I'm trying to talk the wife into it, so not sure yet.

Have any of you boated in the area or that river? I'm thinking of towing to Denton or all the way to Cambridge and puttingin, but not sure where. Who is coming at this point?

Chinaride,

I'm thinking about coming down to your river. Where is a good place to tow to if I am coming South from Bowie on Rt 3 & 301? I might also come down 202 from 495. How long a ride is it to Solomons on the water and is there any resturants/bars/fun places to stop/play/swim on the way down the river?

This may be this year but more likely next. Doing some planning now.

i will be driving down and watching from the old route 50 bridge.

I guess it all depends on if you want to spend the night on the river or not. I usually put in at croom airport road. It can be a little tricky navigating the channels, but is a great ride down the river. You can also go down about 15 min. or so to another ramp, mays or magruder's landing I think, that is much nicer and deeper water ramp. it has picnic tables and stuff like that. If your coming down through bowie I think its just a little farther south and make a left on route 382 and I'd say it's about 10 mile from there. From may/ magruders landing it only about 20 miles down the river to solomon's. But once you get down there the river can get a little bumpy. there's only 2 gas stations from there to solomon's one at broomes island on the left of the river and bennidict right after the 231 bridge, but plenty down in solomon's. As far as places to swim there is a good beach called prison point on the left going about half way down to solomon's. Lots of people hang out there but don't really know who owns that property, never had any problems though. Let me know when you are coming down and we'll meet up. kyle

both of those ramps are owned by patuxent river state park if that helps. there are direction on http://mddnr.chesapeakebay.net/fish/Cntyramps/PG.html
hope this helps

as far as the races I don't want to be the only one in a boat !!!! but are we going to be able to see the race from our boat?

Thanks chinaride, I'll look into the ramps. Maybe I can meet you early on a Sat and you can show me the way down the river channels if it's really tricky. I think if we come it will be an over nighter but a hotel over nighter since our boat doesn't have a cabin and the wife doesn't seem to like the idea of sleeping on the boat :-( I'd want to leave my trailer up river at the ramp over night and possibly find a hotel at Solomons to stay at, with a dock for the boat of course. Do you think that is possible? This may have to be for next year but I may take a drive down to Solomons and the ramps, without the boat, to check things out one day when I'm slow at work ;-)

I'll let you know when.

The Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association web site said that there is not alot of boats that show up to watch the race because you can see it so well from the Hyatt hotel and the old
route 50 bridge. I will be on the bridge during the race this year(I will were something with Checkmate on it).I want to check it out and maybe take the boat next year.(I sure miss the Baltimore race! i could here the boats from my house in pasadena.)
Here is some info from The Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association web site:

EVENT: Cambridge Offshore Racing Event
September 25th, 2005

The CBPBA and OPA are proud to present the annual Cambridge Offshore Power Boat Challenge event on September 25th. This is the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association's premier event, so mark it on your calendars.

Once again, the backdrop and HQ for the weekend will be the spectacular Chesapeake Hyatt Regency Marina and Resort on the Choptank River in Cambridge, Maryland. This is undoubtedly one of the top venues in the country for spectators since it provides a full view of the entire course for fans. Watch from the pier at the Hyatt, the old Route 50 bridge, or from your boat, there is no better place to watch an offshore race in the United States.

Join us on Sunday for the main event. Offshore Power Boats from the Offshore Performance Association (aka The Jersey Boyz) will take to the water, some reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. This race will help determine who makes it to the World Championships this year. We expect racing to begin late morning. If you're coming down Sunday, please note the river will likely be closed to all traffic between 10AM and 3PM.

Racers and fans can make reservations for slips and hotel rooms directly with the Chesapeake Hyatt Marina and Resort at 410.901.1234 ask for Linda Wilson.

Slips can be reserved by calling the Hyatt: 410.901.6380 or 410.901.6319 booked online via http://www.marinalife.com (Hyatt Rivermarsh Marina).

Information and details about the Hyatt property can be found here: http://chesapeakebay.hyatt.com/property/index.jhtml

Hey guys,
Did any one make it to Cambridge for the races? I posted some pic from the race under Open Boating Forum. If any one has any more pics please post them with mine.

If any one in the Chesapeake area is interested some friends and I will be renting slips at the Hyatt resort in cambridge Md in September 2006 for the boat races. I think it would be cool if we could get as many checkmates to show up as possible. If anyone is interested let me know I have the resorts info and fees on hand.

Jan and I and our friends with their Checkmate put in on the Chester River at Deep Creek and rode down to Kent Narrows this fall for the races. It was a great trip and we were able to let the Checkmates do what they do best on the river, go fast!!! We would like very much to meet up in 06 with some other owners.
