Coop needs some help on an outboard.

MERCURY (2.0L)
Serial Number: 05866791 Model Number: 1150620

Add a zero to the front and you can find all the parts on the mercury web site under Parts Express. Looks like it could be an XR2

Some possible help

I have a 1981 V6 150 that I'm sure is like yours.
My serial # is on a plate that is below the cowling on the long casting that goes down to the lower unit. It is on the right side viewed from the motor front. It is possible the metal tag has been torn off I guess.
My motor had a stator problem last year and it was very hard to diagnose because the engine would idle fine but have no guts. Make sure you are getting no spark on any cylinder first.
Your meter says it reads 1200 ohms, but without the manual here I do not know if it is good or not. I will try to look at my manual for help and get back to you.

Oh boy almost sounds like my house I got a project or two that havent been technically running either. Stay strong Coop.:thumb: Aaron

Ok, I had a few minutes to work on this again today. I got out my inline spark tester, and got no spark.

I also got my new compression gauge. And tested the cylinder that I couldn't check with the other one. It read 120pds. Same as the others.

Start working backwards from the plug like I posted earlier till you get some juice. Coils, stator, trigger, merc switch.

Hey Coop, glad to see that you have recovered well enough to be working. Give me a call and I will help you work through this motor prob.. I will P.M. ya with my #. Jon

Got it thanks, and glad to see you back on here. I'll give you a call. Maybe later today.

Good, call me. Glad to be back on here. I was real buisy all summer and fall with work. Now I have some time to mess around (till spring).

I've just about got things arranged in the shop so that I can work on it inside and leave it uncovered. Looking the boat over today, I have lots of work to do to it. Like moving the fuel tank back to the rear of the boat.

I have SPARK!!!!!

But its only on 3 plugs. :( First I found a sparktester that the bulb was not burnt out. Standing behind the motor I have spart on the top left plug and the bottom two plugs on the right. I guess she wont run on three huh?

Maybe I just need some coils!!!!!:bounce:

Switch the coil leads from the 3 coils that you have spark on to the 3 that you don't. If the spark follows the 3 coil leads to the "swapped" coils, the switch boxes are bad, or the trigger, cause you have now "sparked" all 6 coils. If you end up with no spark on the 3 swapped coils, those 3 coils are bad. Check the quality of the connections at the switch boxes for the 3 cyl's. that didn't spark and continuity test the wires from the boxes to the coils and the high tension leads/wires. If o.k. do the above "swap" test. It is o.k. to do this because you are not trying to run the motor, just test coils. If the above test points to bad coils or the trigger, P.M. me and I will give you the ohm meter test info.. So you can double check before you go buy more coils or a trigger.

I hope its coils!!!!

I'll try that tonight, thank you.

Before I went to bed last night I had the bright idea to switch the coils around, moving the good ones to the bad locations. I figured the act of removing them and replacing them, and cleaning the connections might help also. I figured if the same cylinders spark then the problem is elseware, and if the sparks moved with the coils then I need some coils. So it seems I might have been thinking in the right direction anyway.

I may buy a few coils anyway, if nothing else I will have some spares.
