It's an original outboard boat. It is what the 2800sx turned into in 88 or 89. It's the maxxum 281. Hopefully you will get up here sometime. I am always the black sheep running around with twin egg beaters on the back. Good luck with the trip.

yea i went ahead an ordered the aqua buff products hopefully they work out not shore what the gel coat is like havent seen boat besides pictures i am sure it will need some love id be happy if i could get a decent year or two out of it before i get it painted

I'm a firm believer in saving original gelcoat if at all possible. Some hours of tender loving sanding, high speed wet wheeling, aqua buff, and good wax will do wonders to old gelcoat. I'm keeping my original gelcoat and might enhance the boat with some updated wrap to compliment the original gelcoat graphics...but that'll be last on my restoration list!! The boat looks pretty good the way it is right now!:thumb:

Wow what a total let down drove 800 miles an came back empty handed I would not have took that boat home if he would have payed me a 1000 bucks. Trailer was junk Bing was extends light duty axles boat looked nothing like pictures looked like it was in a boat slip through a hurricane cabin was trashed cockpit interior was trashed whole floor rotted not what I was told lesson learned

sorry to hear that. maybe something better will come up. did you take any pictures while you were there to show what it was like?

No I didn't take any I was so disgusted I had to leave I asked the guy to be honest but that is to much to ask

Sorry to hear the bad news:brickwall: Sucks getting your hopes up and driving/investing all that for nothing:pissed:

Another one will turn up soon enough:cheers:

That sucks. I've been down that road before, luckily it was "only" a 5 hour ride up to Boston to see a boat and trailer that didn't come close to being as described.

I had the same thing happen.Took 15k cash to St. Louis to buy a 25' Susation and it was nothing what it was suppose to be. Pissed him off with my 11k offer and I spent the nite at a casino and won $600 to cover my trip luckily. Drove 9 hours back to Michigan where I bought my first Checkmate and saved myself $5k in the process. My Persuader was so clean I could not believe my eyes. The owner had invested more than $55k in it and I had to have it. It all works out in the end and I wish you luck. This is a perfect time to buy a boat.
..

Been there, done that. Drove 20 hours each way for a 303 and came home empty. Ended up with a spotless 283 with twins and could not be happier with my boat!

Sorry to hear that Mouse...you should've offered him half the price and just accepted that you were buying cool hull to be completely restored..You could've sold the old motors and used the xtra $$$ to replace the floor and refinish the hull exterior. The cabins are easily fixed up over time...it's really only headliner and vinyl. The bulkheads are just bolted in place and can be removed, refinished and reinstalled...I spoke to the guy when he first listed the boat and he told me the floor was just laying over the fuel tank with a rug on top of it; that alone told me what kind of shape the boat was in....

Heck, sounds like some of the demolition is already done then :D. At least you can see what you're getting into.

The key to this boat relies on what kind of shape the hull and motors are in. Motors being serviceable versus needing rebuild is probably a $6K difference. Needing replacement ... $10-12K difference.

The rest of the boat is probably less than $5K (DIY), but could be as high as $7-8K. New trailer is $3K.

I'd assume any Check this old and this original is going to need the works. Trouble is, you've got to keep it when you're done because it won't be worth what you put into it. But it would still be just a fraction of a new one.

yea that is true but as far as it needed to be trailered it wasent safe with that trailer and i was under the impression of needing a weekends worth of work to be goood to take out i be beutiful but useable. it had gouges so deep in it i could see the light through them from the inside of the boat the throttles were held down by a giant hose clamp to the pod. didnt have counter rotating lowers but had left an right hand props the guy said you had to run one shifter in forward an other in reverse hints the blown lower it has on it. the motors looked like they been sunk would be scared to pull a head off there prolly isnt any block deck left with the amount of rust everywhere else it would not have been a bad deal for say 1500 bucks but he was still wanting like 6000 for it. if it would have been half way sound i would have got it striped the cabin out completly started over but that wasent the case at all

Yep. Sounds like it needed the works. Sounds like you made the right call.

I inquired about the "Bud" boat years ago when they were asking too much. I even thought about bidding on another 28 on eBay that I believe went for $5100. It was a former race boat. A white one with no windshield. If I was still in the market it may have been me wasting my time going to look at this one.
