1009 i'm guessing you have a jet because of the motor you have but if not, in any case I personally would not start it on land with no water. It only takes 15-30sec. to smoke a water pump. What i have done though is sprayed them with wd-40, and run them for about a minute at a time.I would not recommend running them with no water, that my 2 cents

Get a garden hose and the ear muffs if you want to fire it up.

Don't fire it up without water.

If it's a jet that would be hard to do . You need to get a flushing tee and put it on the inlet water line from the pump to the motor. then all you do is hook up the garden hose to that and fire her up.

Is it indeed a jet?

yes it is a 73 Jetmate.problem is that i already had started it a few times before I was informed not to.I'm a first time owner and wasn't sure. Can i just hook up a garden hose to the connection in the rear by the jetdrive?

1009 if theres a water hook up already instald, yes, in not no. The hose should hook up to a fitting, thats t'ed into your water pickup line. I would have to say that the connection, you have would be what your looking for.I don't know were you live but if you live were it's below freezing don't run water to the motor, wait until spring.

There is a handhole access that you can also use if you don't have a hose hook up. Remove the access hole cover and possition a hose in the top of the hole. Don't push the hose in to far it can come in contact with the rotating shaft.

I would not worry about the fact that you already started the jet drive dry since a jet drive does not have a rubber impeller to damage. If you plan to run the motor for more than a few min. I would be concerned about getting water to the motor as well as the drive.

Only one prob with that taz there are wear rings in the pump that need to be wet to run or the pump will be damaged .

I agree, the drive needs water. But the wear rings will hold up longer than a water pump impeller under the same dty conditions.
