Engine To HOT!

New member
I have a 1991 19' checkmate diplomat I/O with the stock 4.3l v6 GM engine. I am running a 23p 3 blade turbo prop stainless.

When i go faster around 4,000 RPM's the temp goes up to 170. just cruising its at 160.

I might have run over some weeds a while ago but i am not sure. What should the temp be at?

Has anyone ever run without a thermostate? Basically always having it wide open? How would i do that?

I have a 2000 Mercruiser 4.3l. My temp gauge runs 160-170. Why do you think it is running hot? I would not take the theromstat out. You need the engine to heat up so all the internal parts get to the correct tolerances. The engine would also run rich. Best insurance is change the impeller every couple of years.

170 isn't to hot. If you take the t-stat out the engine will not warm up. I see it all the time at work. The t-stat can get something in it and hold it open a little. Then the temp never comes up.

it usually would run 160 with a 4 blade smaller aluminum. plus if i run it longer going fast i sometimes goes over 170.
