exhaust silencing options

Without spending $2,000 on captains call exhaust can i run some tubes from my thru-hull tips down in the water to quiet the engine? When its on plane it will probally still have noise which is fine, my idle is loud and I had some asshole callin the cops on me last year..I seen a guy on youtube with some pipes that did what I am talking about, just wondering if im running any kind of risk's or will lose any performance by doing that. It idles like a cigarette boat which is awesome but I dont want to have to beat this guys ass for callin the cops on me again this year.. it would be nice to have a slightly more quiet idle and be able to take it out after 9pm without the Navy SEALS being deployed to come get me.

I'm sure that would do what you want but the looks of it would be terrible.
What do you have for a motor and exhaust? Is the motor stock or built up?
are you running stock exhaust or headers? water injected or dry?
Gibson makes a thru transom muffler (not inserts but a true muffler) I bought a pair for $650. two years ago. My motor is quite built up and these did quiet it down a bit, still not legal but it's the best I could do. I bet they would work very well on a stock or only slightly built motor. I think I bought mine through CP Performance.
I know how you feel about the people that think they live on Golden Pond, they're never happy unless they're complaining

I have a Persuader 202 with a swim platform built into the hull, unless its on the trailer u cant really see the exhaust. Its just a stock 350 mag. I love the way it sounds, most people do too but there is always one dick head hater who cant handle it.. I even put the baffles back in the pipes and he still cried (maybe that intentional 65mph pass by his house didnt help)..

I did talk to the SGT up at the police station and she said it has to be 90 decibels @ idle from 3ft, I am sure its not that loud.. I was just gonna avoid this mullet headed prick this year by muflling the idle a bit..

find someone (not a cop) to perform a proper decible reading of your boat.
If the test shows your legal ignore the guy and relax when and if the cops show up.
Make sure that anyone performing the test follows the procedures exactly as they are spelled out in you states regs. A friend of mine has a jet boat the cops want to test, but in the test regs show the test must be done sitting still at idle, well a jet boat cannot sit still at idle because it has no neutral. he would fail if tested but they cannot legaly do the test. his boat is obnoxiously loud

yea if i dont rig some sort of silencing on the exhaust I am sure they will be out again. I will do some home work on those test's to see if its properly performed (if or when). Mine would sound like a weed wacker compared to a BB jet boat. funny because there has been some of those obnoxsiouly loud jet boats out there in the past and nobody said ****, the drunks are out there all night blaring music and screaming... but my stock exhaust is too loud..lol thanks for the reply's bro...

My bbc has CORSIN marine mufflers it still has a nice rumble but is very legal I like the sound better than no mufflers !!

ive got a decible meter if you want to test it yourself.....i had that sort of issue, not a$$ calling it in but an area of the river that didnt like it much!

ingore the prick and enjoy your boating.
If the guy doesn't leave you alone, become friends with the jet boat crowd and start hanging out near his house.

Radio Shack sells a Db meter for about $30 that works really well.

As far as your original question, there are quite a few pics of boats over on OSO that have exhaust extensions to below the water line for when you are sitting at idle. Can't remember reading what brand or manufacturer they are from.

Pretty sure then all you have to worry about is the "running" Db test. Can't remember that one either, but some states they can test you under power at like 50 ft from shoreline at WOT.

We don't get hassled for exhaust around here, so I haven't worried about it.

funny how we get harrassed about the loud exhaust and the harley davidsons drive around daily and dont get checked or harrassed!! ticks me off!!

sorry harley guys but its true!

Guess it just depends on where you are because around here you are much more likely to get stopped for riding up & down the "River Road" on a Harley with loud pipes than running on the river with the loudest boats.

Its the same around here with the Fartleys leaving the bar at 2am on a Thursday night and waking us all out of a dead sleep but God forbid your car is a little loud and if its an import you're really forked. I highly recommend anyone who is sick of listening to those things give a watch to this South Park episode for a good laugh:

:lol::lol: Thats a good episode!!!

A stock 350 and the guy is being a A-HOLE. Dry pipes are the only way to go :bigthumb:. If that guy kept calling the cops on me, he would need a scuba suit next time he wanted to sit in his boat.

Well I guess all the drunks and idiots can be out all night yelling, crashing and blaring they're ****ty music without any problems.. If I can't make it quieter for $100 or less I am not touching it.. LOL

I have a Big smile on my face thinking about your 65 mph pass in front of his house. I hazard to bring this up but if the neighbor has done any extra stuff around his place he probably doesn't want your buddy the building official to know about it, I'm just sayin. He may have neglected to get a permit. This can sometimes lead to interesting consecuences for the Checkmate Hater who is obviously unworthy.

Hardin marine sells some nice cheap slip in inserts. I think about $80 for the pair. Check their website, they claim a really good db reduction and have some objective looking db and performance info.

Be sure you measure your exhaust ID. I have a 4" system but my stock tips are aluminum and are thicker so I'm only about 3.75" at the exit. I decided to buy the matching hardin SS tips with internal flappers (about $80 EACH). They look pretty good - sticking straight out. They also sell a 3" and maybe 3.5" insert.

Haven't run them yet.

There are companies who make the big down-pipe you were talking about. They're $$ and do look pretty weird. Slip in inserts are the way to go - IMO.
