expecting to much?

Jamey, the temp runs just a touch over 150 and might make it to 180,, after running it hard. the oil pressure runs at the lowest 40 psi.. i think the fuel additive might be a good idea,, but now you can see my other problem above... again thank you all for the help,, at least i will not look to dumb when i talk to the shop... LOL

I have an '82 Mercruiser outdrive and have similar problems. I am not as experienced as many people here, but I think it is most likely a worn out shifter. I have noticed that with mine, the shifter does not move the cable far enough in either direction to actually engage the gear. If I force the linkage to go just a little bit farther in either direction, then the gears engage. The 'clunking' sound that you hear, is the gears just on the verge of engaging, but not quite.
Funny thing is, I only have this problem when the engine is not running...in the water with the engine running, everything works just fine. It seems that the inertia of everything moving helps the gear engage better.
So in summary, I think it is the old, worn out and sloppy linkage of our older boats that cause this problem...not necessarily the outdrives themselves.

i took it out of gear to coast to the dock, need to put it back in gear and it never went.. foward or reverse!!! will that was the first time i have to put a boat on a trailer with a paddle!!!! anyway i think what ever is wrong with it is on the out unit.. i can see things working on the engine side, but i can turn the prop by hand and i can hear a small clunk in the loewr part of the out drive... so is there a pin or a key that i can look for like the old engines? the drive i have is a 82 alpha drive... going to the boat shop in the morning,, fearing the worse..!!!

Will got the boat back.. the mech put in a washer and a spacer and while he was there he replaced the water pump impeller... will be checking it out this weekend!! if the rain goes away!!!! thanks all ... now i have to work on the trim gauge and get it to work.....

thanks Darin.. Learned that on the lake sunday,, just like you said,, and the seat time is right on the money,, and i ordered my 19p prop today also!!!!!!!! be here wend. so of course i will have to check it out lets say Friday!! LOL Will let you all know if that might have been my problem...... already my wife thinks (or has confirmed) that i am nuts over this boat.. thank goodness she like it to!!! :)

what brand of prop did you get ? alum. or stainless ?
what diameter?

do you have a gps or a friend with one you can take with you?

boat speedos are almost never accurate, most of the time way off.

My trim gauge hasn't ever worked right. If I remember correctly (I was 9 when my uncle bought the boat new) it was never worth much. As for the oil pressure, that sounds perfect. The mechanic that worked on mine said the oil pumps in the mercruisers should always have 40psi, regardless of how you are running it.

i am not sure of the size of the prop, it is alum, black jack?? not real sure but i do know it is made by merc. i have a friend that is suppose to bring and hand held gps this weekend,, hope he remembers it!!!! i will let you know if i find out anything!! cross my fingers!!!!! and i will find out the rest of the info on the prop!

throw that prop as far as you can and look for a clean used mercury mirage

a 15 x 19 for skiing

a 21or 23 for 1 or 2 people to go fast

if you can find a mach sterndriver 4 blade in a 20 it will ski good also

you will be amazed at the difference it will make

I have a mirage 23p ss.. and i could not get the RPM's or speed and you will see in some of the other posts here that it was recomonded that i go to a 19p... well i just did not want to throw away money to bad,, so i started with that one.. it really seems like it is performing good.. NO i am not getting 60mph (according to my speedo) but it has made a heck of a differance in RPM's and speed.. much less the hole shot!!! Please i am willing to learn!! and the friend with the GPS forgot it.. so while tubing i dumped him real good!!!! LOL
