I'd say by year introduced. If the boat was changed radically then we'll note that somehow. For example the 70's Playmate, or 80's Offshore Style Playmate.

That will work! It will also make for a lot of fun since it will include so many models. Let's go for it!
 
A local radio station here basically does like a battle of the bands, Where each week 2 bands are put up head to head, and voted on, the winner moves on to fight again.

Since there are so many checkmates that could be in the run. Maybe you could put up boats head to head from each decade seperately, and then the 5 or 6 final decade winners can be put up in a poll to find out the overall winner?
