Finding the perfect pitch

I have a 1980 Entertainer with a 5.7 V8. I have a 21 pitch prop on it right now, and it will hit right at 60 GPS running 4800 to 5000 rpms. I would really like to keep the RPMs at or below 4800. Would changing to a 23 pitch prop lower my rpms? How much additional speed would that most likely add? It'll pull your arms off with the 21 when skiing ... do any of you think a 23 would reduce my pulling power too much? Thanks for any advice ...

alot will depend on blade shape and size

what prop are you running now

brand name?

dia?

for stern drives i like the mirage or mirage plus from merc

you might liik for a rev 4 in a 21 to lower the revs a bit

or having more cup added to your 21 will lower the rpms

daren

if you are running a 14 x 21 and go to a 15 x 21 you will lower your rpms also

If your exhaust is through the prop, can make up a lot on the bottom end with prop vents... For my diplomat i/o with the v-6 (off the top of my head)

turbo 26" vented, pretty good out of the hole, 60 top end gps at around 4600, some problems with blowout when turning with it trimmed up. If this one didn't blow out, it would be the best all around performer... it beats the 23' laser 2 props out of the hole.

lasr 2, 23" newer hub style, med size plastic vent inserts, best all around performance, good out of the hole, top end around 55-57, 4700-4800

laser 2, 23" earlier version, solid hub, smaller /square vents, not as good out of the hole... 4700-4800

Solas 4 blade 21", (titan) no vents, like a rocket out of the hole, top end at 50,wish I hadn't listened when everyone said to go down in pitch when going to 4-blade. I bet a 23" in this prop would be right on the money... It handles turns better (and I mean turns... without blowing out),is a lot smoother running overall, if it didn't suck on the top end would never come off the boat... as it is i run a laser 2 when playing and the solas when pulling skiers...

Those are just props I currently own. I tried another 8 or 10 that I either borrowed or sold after.

I tried the mirage in a 23' but it was a little slower and a little worse out of the hole than the laser 2 on my set-up...

I'll let you know what happens when I add another 200 horsepower in the next few weeks...

I have a vented 26" Turbo I'm selling... It will definitely lower your RPMs, don't know how much, but
will refund money if not happy! $150 + mail
