Fluid Change

GrBeast001

New member
Hello All,

I recently purchased a 1988 sportfire and it has a 115hp mariner (2 stroke Straight 6) on it. Awesome outboard i am able to get it to go 54mph so far.

My question is does anyone know what weight gear fluid to use? Also how many quarts it takes?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated because i am having a difficult time finding any info.

Thank you in advance.

Go to walmart or a merc dealer and get a couple of quarts of mercury premium plus gear lube and a lower oil unit pump kit. They are cheap and make changing the lower unit lube much easier and cleaner. also get two drain plug gastkets that should have them there as well.
1)Pull the lower drain plug start to let it drain into a pan then pull the upper vent plug. Let all the lube run out. Check for metal on the plug magnet or dicolered milky fliud thats a sign of water in the oil.
2)Once its empty screw in the filler hose in the bottom drain plug and pump gear lube in untill it just starts to come out the top vent hole.
3) put new gaskets on the plugs
4) put the vent plug in
5)Pull the hose off and quickly put the drain plug back in.
DONE!!!

+1

If its anything like my last two boats it'll take just over a quart. I just pump in a whole fresh bottle and keep already opened one to add that little extra to put it over the top.

80/90 weight pennsoil marine lower gear unit oil is what I use, the pump works easyier but I just use the nipple it comes with not the pump, as the other said is right on how to do it but the book says to, when its full to let drain 1 oz. for expansion reasons.
